Looked at the pics again. They look a lot lighter on this computer than on my phone. I probably wouldn't be too happy either if I paid for that.
The OP is asking opinions and advice here. He didn't oust the personal information of the taxidermy shop publicly. What's the problem?
Didn't know we couldn't complain about topics on here.. hmm learn something new everyday... He was asking about what he could do to try and fix it.
Only get a European mount done from a taxidermist who uses dermestid beetles to clean up the skull. Seems like there's less chance for any damage to be done to both the skull and antlers. I've had three done this way and they've all turned out great. I know this doesn't help your immediate situation, but I hope it helps you in the future. Good luck!
Ok here's the thing, I truly am not complaining. I just don't like when my antlers get damaged. this guy isn't a real taxidermist. He is a polish guy my dad is friends with who did it for FREE, because my dad does him favors all the time. My dad told me, and he said give it to him, and I said ok. I have absolutely no problem getting a real taxi and paying full price. It just didnt work out that way this time. I cant say anything at all, since he did it as a favor. I just want my antlers to look nice. That is all.
That's why I boil my own antlers and pick them clean. Time consuming, but they come out nice every time.
I think it looks fine myself. I wonder where the phobia of scratched antlers came into play. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Once again congrats on your Buck, it's a beauty! Actually the scratches may have already been there, I have some with them that was from rubbing something like maby a fence post with wire or nails in it, you just don't always see it all until there cleaned up. Now the bleaching on the burs, yes he could have done better there. Just order a taxi supply catalogue there is plenty of products in there for coloring
Either way it is Great buck, congrats! Looks better than the tag soup I am currently looking at. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I honestly dont care what people notice on my deer. I am the only one who notices anyway, but thats all I care about. For thos of you who have seen it done, will (I) be able to tell its painted if its a good artist? thanks
You have a right to be upset but it is a easy fix. Get some wood stain and touch it up and never let the dude touch another rack again. He did a lousy job and had no clue what he was doing
In my opinion, you have a far better chance of not liking the paint job than you do just using a little dirt or stain and touching up the bases and scratches. I would not want it painted for sure.
Shane, I know this might not help immediately, but trust me when I say you will kill more bucks and 10 years from now you'll look at these antlers and laugh about it. Maybe even rib your ol' man about the great advice he gave you that one time. :-)
I don't know Shane, maybe you should put everything back into perspective... I think you're reacting as if someone scratched up the paint on your brand new Ferrari... We are talking about the skull of a dead animal here, and event though I personally own a few, there is nothing nice or pretty about a bleached skull. Yes, there are easy ways to repair it, as many recommended... sanding down the scratches, wood stain or even epoxy filling for the deeper scratches. But at that point, you got to realize... it's just a freekin skull man ...
I would make a point to sometime very kindly point out the importance of being careful with the bleach and handling them to prevent scratches. If he wants to do the boiling instead of beetles than suggest to him to mix peroxide 40 volume into a paste with some Basic White powder and paint it on. (I'm doing my first euromount now and this is what i've learned from many videos and articles, hope it's good advice) I think that would reduce the chance of it spilling over onto the antlers. Lot's of examples on youtube. It might be an uncomfortable conversation cause he's your dad's friend but chances are he'll do more euromounts in the future for other excited successful hunters and will only learn by someone such as yourself teaching him.
