This is only my 3rd year bow hunting. I hear everybody talking about FOC. I did some research and found a formula to calculate the FOC without having the weight of the arrow, draw weight, or the bows fps. I calculated my arrows using the formula. With a regular nock and a 100 gr. field point it was 10.46%. With a tracer nock and 100 gr. field point it was 8.00%. And with a tracer nock and 100 gr. Rage 3 Blade broadhead it was 7.82%. I shoot a Mathews S2 70# draw weight & 27 inch draw, and the arrows are Beman ICS Hunters (Black), with 2" blazer vanes. Are my arrows where they need to be? Please help me try and understand if I am shooting what is best for me. Thank you!

10% plus is good for most any bowhunting application you will find.

I've shot bow for 15 years and have never tried to figured out what my FOC is?

My arrows fly well...that's all I care about I guess.

Once upon a time......whenever I got a new batch of bareshafts; the hard work would begin. I'd nock both ends of the arrow (before installing the insert) and float them in warm soapy water to find the heavier spined side, mark it, and fletch so I believe that side was down when I shot the arrow. Then proceed to calculate FOC, and all that other crap.

Fast forward to present. The only thing I did with my newest batch of arrows was cut, insert, and fletch. I still might calculate FOC b/c I'm curious now but I won't change anything if the number is too low. Sometimes I think we need to K.I.S.S. I tend to over complicate things which adds unnecessary stress and work to my life. Got enough of that already.

You really need to be above 10% but I can tell that you are figuring it different than what is recommended for arrows. You are obviously measuring to the end of the broadhead which is incorrect according to AMO standards which is where the 10% rule comes from. You figure FOC to the end of the raw shaft, not the end of the broadhead to the nock groove.

If you still need more foc at this point,go with feathers, that will bump you over the 10% mark if you are still wanting to use Tracers.Or use a 125 grain broadhead.

This is the proper AMO standard.

    FOC

I did measure the FOC with a regular nock using the raw shaft to nock groove and it was 12.67% and with a tracer nock it was 10.28%. Are these better numbers for my setup. Thanks for all the information guys, I really appreciate it.

I think that is acceptable. Many are going with really high foc nowadays(20%+) for better penetration and broadhead flight. Not a bad idea but not necessary. You are right where you need to be.
