Alright here's the deal. This is one piece of a public area that I hunt. It's probably the most obscure of the 10,000 acre area but it still gets hammered with hunters. Tonight I set up my climber in a place that I've killed two deer in previous years, but an early wind shift left me all but wasting my time. Previous to the wind shift I let a deer walk that I probably shouldn't have for this property. He was a 9pt that would probably score just under or right at 120. Under the cover of wet leaves from an all day rain, I slipped out of my stand to do some game time scouting/still hunting. I did the mohican sneek for almost an hour and learned some interesting stuff. The aerial photo below depicts the area and several of it's characteristics. I've got an idea as to where I'm going to try and set up next, but I'm interested in your thoughts. Here is the "Key" to my map: Red Line - Property line Yellow Dots - Red Oaks LOADED and dropping (the majority of my woods are scrub oaks with acorns slightly larger than deer turds. Yellow "Mist" - Scrub/Black Jack Oaks Teal Lines - Deer spotted and the their direction tonight Red Dots - Previous kills (also where I sat tonight) Pink "Mist" - Almost impenetrable thicket/Bedding area (Pink dots are actual beds) Pink Line - Heavy Trails *Edit* Here's a clean one to mark up...
What's your primary wind direction? Any streams/water on there that I can't see? Where can you enter/exit?
I have yahoo but it's freezin' up my pc... trying to fix it now. That is my plan, to sit at the corner of the woodline at the head of that arrow. Matt, my primary wind direction is South and will switch to North later on. There is a creek to the west of the wheat field but that is the only water that I'm aware of. I can enter from the N, S, or W... pretty much anywhere.
looks like a natural funnel between the red oaks and the previous bedding areas, with a possible water source at the end, and wind in your favor. bet there are some decent trails through there
I'm gonna assume you have our lovely south wind, for now atleast. I like these 2 spots, and anything in this general area. But please, take it with a mouthful of salt :D
