I picked up this climber at a yard sale this morning but it has no brand on it. After spending a few minutes checking the welds and cables I decided it was worth the $20 I was about to spend on it.:woot:

    Does anyone recognize this climber?

It's a summit. It looks like it could be a viper but the flaps over the cable slots are odd. You got a hell of a deal for $20. You can get replacement cables for it at bass pro or cabelas. Good find man!

I agree it looks like the Summit Viper, maybe an early model of the stand? The flaps over the cables and the climbing stirups are the only things that doesn't match up with my Summit.

    Here's a link to their site http://www.summitstands.com/catalog.aspx?catid=viper

Summit viper, good stand. If using it for archery, make sure you tighten the seat so that your knees are against the bar. If not you really have to keep an eye on your bottom cam when shooting

Yes this is whats throwing me off too.

Your preaching to the choir my friend. This is the reason I bought the Summit Open Shot last season.

What I am planning is using the Open Shot top section with the yard sale stand bottom section since its bigger (my only complaint on the Open Shot).

I've been looking at the Dagger...seems like a nice compromise between the open shot and the Viper....open but with longer arms

The Dagger looks to be a nice stand. What sold me on the Open Shot was the flip up seat.

I would just cut the cross bar off, then you have an open shot with out the folding seat. My summit is an old bushmaster, that is the same stand with no cross bar. weighs 16lbs. nice stand, and very good buy!

Correct me if I am wrong but won't it be rather difficult to climb up a tree if that crossbar is cut? Also, is it a good idea to change the structure?

Yep, older Summit Viper with the old style cable lock. Good stand. I've got 2.

Like Mobow said, I've got a couple of these as well.... I wouldn't have thought there'd been any question about the make and model, as this was probably the most popular stand ever during its era (which wasn't THAT long ago...)

I'd caution you on cutting off the shootting/sitting rail to turn it into a Cobra (the hand climber version of the Viper). I contacted my buddy Will at Summit about this years ago when I was contemplating such a move, and he advised against it.

You can, if you wish, simply buy an alternate top for it so you'll have two stands in one if you wish to go that route.

Absolutely, positively a Summit Viper. I paid $150 used for mine in 2004, it's killed a lot of deer and I still use it all the time. Great deal for $20, I'm going to have to spend that much in paint!

If you pay attention and adjust your seat straps correctly, it's almost impossible to hit your cam on the bar... I've killed well over 20 deer out of mine and never had an issue... :ninja:

My "guess" is, it's an older steel version.

I wouldn't cut the bar, either.

$20 is a great deal. Congrats.

I am a fabricator by trade and it is the same stand without the crossbar. No difference, if you want to know if it is steel or aluminum, put a magnet to it, it wont stick to aluminum. I have the non crossbar stand with all the same hardware, if you dont feel safe cutting the cross bar then dont.

In no way am I planning to cut the bar.

I think between the Viper bottom section and Open Shot top section (which I already have) that I will have the perfect climber for me.

    Thanks for the info.

Damn, I can never find those type of yard sales, it's always Phillies trinkets and baby cloths. Although, I did get a Hummingbird Fish finder for ten bucks during Gobbler season when we cut out of the woods early one Friday.
