What would be the best way to estimate my deers weight? The only weight I have is from the butcher. So that is minus the head, cape and guts. The weight there was 122lbs. I've just read lots of people giving of field dressed weights and was somewhat curious as to what mine would have been?

Would he have been in the 250lb range as a living deer?

if you got 122 lb of packaged meat that deer was huge! You get about 40-50% package to field dressed. That excludes the heart liver. So with no heart liver I put that deer at 260+ field dressed and 325 on the hoof.

I was charged for processing 122lbs of meat. So I'm sure that that would include the bones and whatnot but not 100% sure. He wasn't a monster bodied deer, but definatly wasn't a small guy.

Even with bone in meat field dressed weight is well over 200 lb.

I've been told by processors, that you get approx. 45% of the deers "on the hoof weight" back in processed meat. That would put that deer at approx. 271#'s. Pretty close to the 250#'s estimated.

Do you have a photo of the deer? Is the total weight (122#) just meat, or the whole carcass minus field dressing, head & cape?

If it's the deer in your Avatar, I'd have a hard time putting him over 250#. If you have a photo, post it.

yeah it is the deer in my av. Here is a pic of it again. I don't know exactly what the butcher goes by when charging you, it just showed up as 122lbs on the bill. I'm assuming that it would be the weight of the carus minus the head and hoofs. But all other bones intact. He isn't a massive deer compared to some I've seen in pictures, but he isn't a little guy. I was just hoping to have a better idea on what deer weights were. Just so I can relate a little more to threads posted on other peoples success stories.

Looking at the picture, I'd guess 200-225 at the most.

I'd say 225-250#, but guessing weight is for circus performers...

Regardless, congrats on the great buck! I love the curve on his browtines.

    How big are you? I would say 122 + 35(guts) + 20(head/neck) + 20(hide/legs) = 197lbs

I'm about 5'10 180. Me and my bro dragged him a little bit to get him on a slope to get the guts out and he wasn't all that tough to drag around. The more I think about it, I think you guys are pretty close with the 225 mark.

Thanks for the compliment fitz, I can't wait to get my euro mount back and to get a measurement on him. I highly doubt that he is a pope and young buck, but i think a 100" + deer as my first is pretty good.
