I have an '09 Bowtech Admiral, my father in law drew and dry fired the bow, the string came flying off the cams but the bow looks intact. I don't have a press and ironically just ordered a set of Octane custom strings and cables friday. Can someone help ease my mind by saying that this has happened to them and it's not that big of a deal?? Can I leave the string off for 2 weeks until my new ones get in without damaging the bow?

Dry fires are always a big deal. You should have a knowledgeable bow technician look at your bow.

Yes. U can leave the strings off the bow for now. That won't hurt anything.

Now whether something was hurt as a result of the dry fire I have no way of knowing. Lots of things could have potentially happened. But then again. It's entirely possible nothing is hurt.

I'd take it into a proshop and have them look it over if I were you.

As Bruce and Fitz both said, take it to a pro and have them look it over.

I drew a Mathews Z7Xtreme that I had just bought and when I let it down I think the string came off the cam because I let the bow twist as I let it down. What I got was a dry fire that sounded like a small explosion. All I had to do was get them to put the string back on. I have looked up dry fire on several sites and goggled it and found most dry fires usually only require a new string. That is not to say other things can't happen. It might make you feel better if you start checking it out yourself. Rub the bow limbs with a cotton ball. If they are cracked the cotton will snag in the crack and make it easier to see. You should be able to look at your cams and see it they are bent or damaged. Seeing no damage in these areas I would say you too are one of the lucky ones. Your new string is on the way so just chalk it up to a good learning experience.

That sucks. Why was he pulling your bow back without an arrow nocked anyways? Hope nothing is wrong with it.

OUCH... Definately get it checked !!! Would hate to see you put a string on it, draw back and have a limb crack.. Talk about alot of sharp debris flying right back at your face !!!!!!!!!! No way would I not get that checked.. Good luck and hope nothing is wrong.. Not trying to scare you, just trying to save you an eye and a bunch of teeth..

Alright grits, just got home from work, stole the wife's cotton balls and headed to the man cave, should've seen the confused look she gave me it was hilarious. I rubbed teh cotton all over and no signs of cracked limbs and the cams look perfect. My proshop is closed today but taking it in tomorrow. I'm starting to be their favorite customer there lol. Just had 30 arrows refletched with feathers for my whisker biscuit, a new g5 peep put in and ordered new Octane strings. Not sure if the feathers made them faster but it sure as hell felt like it and my grouping is insane. I really appreciate all of the replies. This forum is a godsend for newbie hunters such as myself.

You should be able to sleep better tonight. Let us know how it turns out. After I dry fired mine I decided not to ever pull it back without an arrow knocked. I have heard testimonials where guys actually pulled back without an arrow and fired. I wondered how this could happen and then I was carrying on a conversation one day and hooked my release and started to pull back and then realized i didn't have an arrow knocked. From that time forward I changed my regimen. I had been telling myself steps as I went through the motions like get proper stance, get proper grip, get good anchor, and squeeze trigger and then good follow through. I now start by telling myself to "pay attention stupid" :whip: So far this is working pretty good.
    Good luck with your bow.

I took it in yesterday. All is well. String back on, got a pretty good laugh when I told them the story. It was a pretty tense few minutes when he was looking it over, I was nervous as hell. Father in law paid for it to be restrung, I wish I could sue him for emotional distress! lol. Thanks again guys.

Brother, I done the same thing, I pulled a bow back and lost my grip causing it to dryfire. I wasn't as lucky as you, my draw stop broke, the came was bent.

had that happend. My buddy dry fired mine. Stripped the cam. cost about 120 bucks for a new cam for my DXT. take to your local shop and get them to check everything to make sure nothing else was damaged. I wouldnt have been so mad if opening day wasnt a week away. Missed the first week of bow season because of him. I was pissed to say the least.

Yes this has happened to a few of us. :) first time it happened to me was 3 yrs ago. I was guiding for black bear, and just before new hunters arrived i decided to take a few shots at the block. I went inside the main lodge to get a drink, come back about 5 mins later to introduce myself to the new group of hunters.. When all of a sudden in the background i hear a loud SNAP. I loocked over and all i seen was a European hunter with my hoyt bow in hand with a snapped string and a confused look on his face. Being from europe he wasnt too familiar with archery, since they are not allowed to hunt with bows there...but it happens, haha, great guy though. He payed for a new string. :tu:

about a month ago i was on my way out to hunt at 430 am and pulled my new hoyt rampage to full draw to make sure my peep sight lined up with my front sight and when i let it down the string slipped off my fingers and the string snapped and my peep shot off like a bullet and the bow string brused and cut my hand open lol..but my bow was fine..take it to your local bow shop and have them look over it!

Glad it all turned out. Dry fires are nothing to mess with and you did the right thing. They can wreak havoc on all kids of components. Keep an eye one it for a while and inspect it every few shots. Take note of any differences in noise, vibration, etc.

Rule #1 - NEVER, under any circumstances draw a bow back without an arrow.

I have never dry fired one and don't plan on it. My bows never get pulled back without an arrow, regardless of what I may be doing.
