Looking for some insight. I used to shoot a PSE Durango with Red Head carbon arrows, WB and 100 gr BH , killed lots of deer with it , but never paid much attention to the spine of an arrow or grains per inch. I haven't been hunting in 5 years and technology is playing games with my head. Next year will be my first year back. I now shoot a Switchback 70# 29.5dl, 28 inch CX Maxima 350 arrows 8.9 GPI, 125gr FP, WB rest (switching to NAP apache when I get home from Afghanistan). I have not hunted with this setup since I got it last year, but it's paper tuned and shoots bullet holes for me. Is there really any truth to this grains per inch and arrow spine stiffness as long as you shoot bullet holes and hit a 3 inch circle from 40 yds out? right now I just shoot what I have cause it came as a package and shoots well but, my normal way to choose would be to find the closest straightness tolerance of a brand of arrows, and then match up with the chart on the back of the box of arrows to make sure I was getting what the manufacturer deemed the best arrow for my DW/DL. Should I get straighter/lighter arrows like the Victory VForce V1 400 @ 8.1 GPI or 500 @ 7.2 GPI and drop my BH weight down to 100 gr, and then re-paper tune????? what would the advantages/disadvantages be as far as penetration, speed (IBO) and flight charactaristics???? Thanks
Welcome to the Forum and thank you for your service! I'm sure many guys that know much more than I will chime in, but in my opinion, I'd keep the slightly heavier arrows. Sounds like they are flying great for you and for hunting, I'd take a little weight over a little speed. Stay safe over there and get back soon!
Thanks, I appreciate the good wishes...only 23 more days. When I get home I plan on trying it out on some California Wild Hog... I Hope! Then I'm getting stationed in North Carolina, so if you know of anyone that has property or knows someone who does i would be more than happy to lease out in NC. cant wait for next year!!!
I have a house to sell...want a nice house in Jacksonville, NC...cheap? Army or Marine? I have a cousin, retired LtCol in Bragg who may know of some land. If Marine, hunt on base...crap loads of deer if your going to Lejern...
Marine! Semper FI Gonna be at Cherry point for 2-3 years then down to New River for the last 3-4 and retire, and hopefully hunt for the rest of my life... at least thats my plan. So tons of deer on base how many people hunt on base and how restricted is it? Camp Pen is a joke for hunting, only hunt on weekends and only in specific areas.
sobradsayz, did you say you were a heli mechanic? or did I make that up? One of my best friends flies $hitters in Miramar. He just got back from Asscrackistan.
No BS i work up in pendleton on cobras and hueys. been to miramar many times... what squadron is he with? i just got off a deployment last july with some $hitter dudes...
466 were the $hitter$ but collectively we were 163 reinforced. they floated with us on the 13th MEU in early 2009. The Maersk Alabama story with Capt Phillip Richards that got hi-jacked and kidnapped by the somolia pirates... our boat was the boat he was flown to after he was rescued. kind of a cool piece of Marine Corps history... our boat was the first to engage pirates on the open seas since the Battle of Tripoli and the Barbary Pirates in 1804. sorry got on a tangent there for a second. he wasnt on that MEU, I dont think
