I really need some advice on arrow weight for Cow Elk season coming up. I have a 60lb bow with 29 inch arrows and I will be shooting 100 grain broad heads. Are my whitetail arrows ok or should I get some heavier arrows for more penetration? thanks in advance
So a lot of the guys up here recommend 470 grains. I’m relatively new to elk hunting and that’s what I was told by numerous people. Like @Fix said shot placement is key the heavier arrow is for the extra mass to give you an opportunity for pass through or at the very least, an exit hole for quicker kill and better blood trail
Heavier arrows never hurt! Check out the podcast by meateater about arrow technology. Super interesting research from the guy they interviewed
Welcome. I too am at 60 lbs., but with 31" arrows. I went heavy for my arrow setup (590 gr.) on whitetail and based on what I saw this last weekend, I would venture to guess it would be plenty sufficient for a Cow Elk. It might have actually been a bit too heavy, but it definitely got through the deer.
