Which would you choose for your first layer?

Neither in those weights. You would be better served to get a lightweight or even silk weight for the first layer, then the heavyweight for the second layer. The idea of your first layer should be solely for wicking purposes, not warmth.

As for brands. I HIGHLY recommend looking at Minus33 Merino. Its mountaineering stuff and is top notch. I believe a little better than both Sitka and First Lite.

I agree on minus33. I wear their lightweight stuff all hunting season then add to it from there.

What type of hunting are you using it for? Active hunting or sitting in a stand?

Active hunting you need layers that can breath. I love 3/4 zip shirts for either type of hunting to let hot air out.

Stand hunting....use cabelas or polartec stuff in cold weather and you will be fine. Plenty of options.

If active hunting look at merino wool in different weights. Will work in either situation. Plenty of companies.
