We were hit today with pretty nasty virus called CryptoLocker. CryptoLocker attacks typically come in three ways: 1) Via an email attachment. For example, you receive an email from a shipping company you do business with or from an unknown source. Attached to the email is a .zip file. Opening the attachment launches a virus that finds and encrypts all files you have access to — including those located on any attached drives or mapped network drives. 2) You browse a malicious website that exploits vulnerabilities in an out-of-date version of Java. 3) You"re you're tricked into downloading a malicious video driver or codec file. There are now two known variants of virus\malware that cause this problem: Win32/Crilock.A and Win32/Buma!rts. In order to clean your machine, run Microsoft Safety Scanner (Microsoft Safety Scanner - Antivirus | Remove Spyware, Malware, Viruses Free). If infected, Safety Scanner should clean the virus from the system, however it will not repair corrupted files. You will still need to restore those from a backup or shadow copy if you have it enabled on your xp, 7 or 8 PC
