Well I have my truck packed and will be heading south in Illinois to Mosenthein Island. It is an island in the Mississippi River by Granite City. It should be a blast. I have hunted there with my cousin the last two years. The only downfall of this is you have to put your boat in at the Arch in St. Louis and run it 6 miles up river to the island. It is a cold trip; but the hunt well surpasses the cold ride up. The fun part is when we go back to the boat for lunch I will be bringing my bowfishing bow and will be hitting some silvers jumping......Should be fun. Will let y'all know how it goes... Ken
Well we woke up this morning and OMG....The weather sure didn't cooperate at all.....20-30 mph gusts and rain!!!...We have decided to wait and get out to the island and begin hunting around noon....It is one thing to sit in a tree at 30 mph winds let alone having to boat 6 miles up the Mississippi in it! Oh well...I plan on videoing this trip so I should get some decent footage... I will let y'all know..
Well Saturday turned out to be nothing....and Sunday was the same....I did not see a deer! My cousin took a shot at a 160 class and hit a limb about 2 feet in front of him and over the back it went... Monday we decided not to hit the island until around 10am. We were going to hunt em from the ground and do a stalk. I came apon a rub line on trees literally 13-18 inces in diameter and about 3-4 feet off of the ground. Then I saw his scrape....The size of a Volkswagon!...I decided to sit there against a tree about 10 feet in diameter. Long story short I had a doe come in about 1:30 on the last day of the hunt and figured I would take the shot. It was a 45 yarder. She ran 35 yards and bled out thanks to my new Rage 2's....
Yea, I was getting desperate.. Any deer that is taken on this island is a huge trophy...you really have to work for it! We are talking waking up 3 in the morning to fuel up the truck and boat; 30 min ride to the riverfront in St. Louis; put in there and ride 6 miles up river to the island. Then you have to hike into the island about 1/2 mile. If you are lucky you get to pluck the string and drag the deer all the way back to the boat through hell and high water. I will tell you this though....I am sure grateful I have private farm ground to hunt and do not have to rely on hunting that island exclusively like my poor cousin does!
