...to FINALLY go hunt our "prime" land. First time this year we are going to sit on it. Should see some deer tonight boys!
Well, last night wasn't all that great. We glassed about 20 deer on the property to the east. I have a stand hung on our side of the property overlooking the southeast corner of our beanfield, so I got in it and tried calling them over. None of them bit on it. About sundown the coyotes started yelping, probably about 300 yards to my northeast, and spooked all the deer. I literally watched 30-40 deer funneling across that field. Was an awesome sight! I stayed put until the end of legal shooting light and headed in, disappointed in not seeing any deer within shooting range. Decided to go out tonight and try again. This sit went a little better. I climbed into a stand I hung a couple years ago near 2 intersecting trails. We have a road mowed through there as well, and the deer tonight seemed to travel it. First deer came in on the road from the east. Small 6-point buck, probably 2.5 years old. Once he turned and went north into the woods, another small buck came in from the same spot. This one was a little smaller, basically a 4-point around 1.5 years old. He turned and went north into the woods as well. 20 mins. later a doe and 2 fawns came running in on the road from the west. They stayed close for a bit, then turned north into the woods. 5 mins. later I spot a BIG bodied deer to my northwest walking into and across the beanfield. I glassed him and noted he was a big 10-point, but he was roughly 200 yards away. I tried getting him to come in, but with the wind fighting against me I don't think he ever could have heard me. 15 mins. later, another doe and fawn came in from the road to the west. They seemed to go on alert as they got closer and kept looking straight ahead to the east. I tried looking that way to see if a big buck was on the road heading this way, but 2 cottonwoods were blocking my view. The doe and fawn finally turned back around and ran out of there. The wind was straight out of the north, so I am not sure how they could have busted me being to my northwest. I even had some doe urine put up to the north of me to mask my scent even more. I stayed in the stand for 30 minutes longer until legal shooting light was upon me. I climbed down and headed back to the rig. All in all it was a great night. Finally got to see some deer WELL within shooting range, so that is good. I might go and sit in the deep woods tomorrow since I have yet to visit that area this year. Last year my buddy took a 13-point that netted 180+ in the same stand, so hopefully I have the same luck this year.
