Sounds to me like "Michael" needed a good strong FATHER-FIGURE in the house to keep him straightened out. Maybe a trip to church one or twice a month, and a little lock up if he persists to have such outbursts with filthy language and threats.... Sounds like a kid lacking GOOD PARENTING, not a mentally ill child....

It just like the poor cops out there so many people hate them because they are cops but when they need them they love them.

Outstanding .... unfortunately America will do what he said they will....what they did shortly after 911 .... usher God out...

You that are reading this .... you need God ... if you don't have Him now, you better get Him before you die .... His hands are outstretched....

It really bugs me when people dig for reasoning and come back with excuses.

I don't care what he was taking or what was wrong with him. He is a killer and knew precisely what he was doing. Killing by reason of insanity or mental instabiliy is total bull ****.

I disagree. We need to find the reason, if one exist. I think knowing this drug creates psychotic behavior would be good to know. Its not like this is a recreational drug. He was prescribed it and it was supposed to help him get better, not worse.

No one is coming back with excuses or digging for reasoning!! What're you talking about? How do you fix something when you have no idea what the problem was in the first place? It's very easy to get a knee jerk reactions and blame guns or any other issue that people might have personal issues with but there are clearly deeper issues here. The release of mind altering medications that have not been tested yet are at play here and have been in other mass killing. That is fact. How do you "backcountry" have any idea what is going through a sick persons head? Your statement that "He is a killer and knew what he was doing" is clearly ignorant. This killer was clearly not mentally stable and was on anti-psychotic medication. My statement is that the real root of this problem is not guns, knives etc as these psychotic individuals will always find a way to murder the innocent. The issue is how be deal with the mentally unstable and the medications that are given to them unchecked. I believe this is the real root of the problem. How to combat it is clearly incredibly complex of which I don't have an answer.

So you guys think a normal mental side effect from a prescription drug would be to shoot your mother, load several pistols and an AR, drive her car to a school, shoot your way in, and then kill children?

    No.

I could understand a rampage with an axe... Maybe. But not this. This was planned and he was cognitive.

This was not an agressive backlash from a drug.

Since 1999 we have had 31 of these shootings.

Something is broken and I do not think it's the "gun". Kids use to take guns to school and go hunting afterwards, we use to carry pocket knifes.

Something is broke in our fundemetal value system.

I may be reaching here, but I think it just has to do with recognition. Back in the days where someone in a bad state just quietly sat in a room & shot themself or took drugs until they died you didnt have shootings too often. Then a couple happen. Instant media and sensationalized broadcasting put those shootings front & center for days/weeks. Then a few more happen. And now it's gotten to a point where it's the "normal" way to go out when you feel like leaving this world, make as big a splash as you can, top the last shooting.

Agreed!!! Yet at the same time, I think for someone to go and murder people in cold blood you have to be at some level insane, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you don't KNOW what you are doing.

    http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout...es-planning-control-former-fbi-180620270.html

Actually, from the sounds of it, this whacko had thoroughly planned out his slaughter of people, to the extend of destroying computers, wearing a bullet-proof vest, etc... Not sure how you can deny or question whether or not he knew what he was doing... to do so is pretty ignorant to the facts....

Too often we look past the obvious to try to give someone a defense, but I don't see one here... It sounds as if this kid was a NUT, but also a NUT who knew exactly what he was doing... Looking at him, he looks like a kid that needed someone to take him aside and get him a decent haircut, and maybe someone to provide him some mentoring and guidance in life rather than just feeding him money...

As far as HOW do you deal with the mentally unstable, I think you ask a reasonable question, and at some level, we need to be willing to commit people when appropriate. I've taken care of patients who absolutely KNEW what they were doing when they broke nurses fingers, bit, kicked, scratched, etc, but the truth was, they just didn't care. They were just evil, nasty people (PERIOD)!!! I've also taken care of some people who were mentally deranged d/t metabolic disorders, etc, but they weren't with it enough to devise plans, accept responsibility, etc. There are a couple different levels of dealing with it, in this specific situation, he wasn't mentally incapacitated at all, he was just EVIL, and unreigned.

Totally agree..............it was definitely planned! These people live in an altered reality to ours and believe what they are doing is right or justified. Son of Sams believed his dog was telling him to murder people. Jeffery Damer kept heads in his refrigerator and ate his victims. Dylan Klebold was clearly disturbed and Fluvoxamine was found in his body at the time of death. Abrupt cessation of SSRI antidepressants has been found to interfere with normal social functioning in patients.
These individuals are sick and murder innocent people with no remorse (who in their right mind can murder children!!!).
The mental state of psychotic individuals coupled with mind altering prescription medication can be lethal and this is fact. Clearly some are just sick enough without any medication to accelerate or alter their course.
I believe that Guns, knives, bombs etc are the vehicle and not the root cause.
