I guess calling this guy a donut eater and firing him was otta line huh? Ever wounder how much training some of those guys with "Security" on the backs of their tee shirts really have? They have guns, mace and handcuffs but how much "state of mind" work goes into "Security Guards" training programs? http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/08/2...mpire-state-building-in-manhattan-police-say/
I was "let go" from a job when I was 17. It was subway. My mom ran 15 subways and 2 gas stations for a guy. She was great at it and he paid her very well. The guy ended up losing his *** over a couple other business ventures that failed, so he laid my mom off. My sister and I worked at one of the stores, and shortly after he laid my mom off, the manager let me go. She was bawling- she felt bad and she didn't want to do it. It wash because I was a bad worker, the owner didnt want us around anymore. My sister was next, so she quit. She had been there 4 years. Now I'm an assistant store manager for Walmart- I fire people all the time. Not always good, but it Comes with the territory.
One of the scary things to me as a cop is security guards. A lot of times there is a little to no regulation on them... I've seen them get arrested for battering someone and falsely ”arresting” them. Crazyness.... I have had a lot of manager n supervisor jobs in the past, hired n fired plenty.
Fired people many times over the years, never fired anyone that wasn't given plenty of time to improve their performance or attendance. Been fired? Never happened until July 24th of this year when I was pulled and advised I would be getting let go after 12 years with my company. I can honestly say it was the biggest kick in the nuts I have had in the working world and found out on the back end that I was targeted by an old director that had a beef over me reporting a few Code of Conduct violations. Turns out it was a blessing in disguise as I'm getting a healthy severance payout and start a new job in a week.
Haven't had to fire anyone, yet. Just recently hired my first few people. Only been doing this manager gig for about 6 months now.
Its had to put yourself in the situation these guys found themselves, but you'd think (or hope) they would've been ready or at least more accurate shots. I know enough officers & soldiers who have had to pull their weapon, but almost all were decent shots under pressure. On the lighter subject. Yup, hired many and fired some, though most firings were well deserved and/or for performance. Its like public speaking, you get better with practice. I had to fire one guy have way around the world. He was from India and here on an L1 work visa, when I fired him, it also meant he had to return home to India. The other most notable was the guy who called in 'sick' for the second day in a row, something didn't seem right and he confessed to me he was really calling from jail. Others due to stupid crap like budget reasons--those firings just suck for everybody involved and affected.
I have been in leadership rolls for quite some time. Until 5 months ago I was only responsible for one firing and didn't actually do it. Since I started this new job I have actually fired 1 and have 3 that are on their way out. It's just a matter if time. I felt worse for the family of the guy. His work record sucked and his wife and 2 kids are the ones suffering his immaturity and irresponsibility. I look at it this way. I have a job to do and that is run my shift. If someone is inhibiting that, I give them ample opportunity for improvement by suggestion but, if they don't head, I don't need them. I don't lose sleep over doing my job and doing it well. Firing is part of my job.
Had to terminate a few AF Reservists over the years. Its not much fun and takes months of accurate counseling records and referrals to helping agencies. Its funny how easy, you, the manager can quickly become the object of attention when you start down that road.
My wife had an arcade years ago and one employee decided not to show up or call in for two weeks. I told her that he had effectively quit by no contact. Anyway, when he did show up, he started throwing a fit because he wasn't on the schedule. My wife if 5' tall and he was 6' 4" or so. She called me, I drove to her store and confronted this guy. He told me that he had been given a chance to substitute teach at a school and since it paid better, he took it. He went on how he had to leave to get there right away and had not had a chance to call. Now that the job was done, he was back and wanted to work. After a few choice words from me, he left. A month later, my wife got notified that she and I were being sued by this dirtbag. His lawyer offered to drop the suit if we signed over the store to his client. Anyway, we went to court, they lost, cost us the store to pay off the lawyer that defended us. Turned out this guy had pulled this act like 7 times before and we were the only one's who refused to settle out of court. That was 24 years ago, and I can still remember his name and where he was from.
Sorry to hear that Raceway. Verizon lost a good employee In my eye's. As for me, I've fired 2 people and came to a mutual agreement with a couple others. I hate firing people that work for me. Reason being, It takes a month to train someone else In.
I've had to fire alot of people over the years. Its never fun. The worst was having to fire a woman 3 days before Christmas. That call came from upper management.... I wanted to wait but they wouldn't have it. Turned out she was stealing money from the company. It was needed, but not something I wanted to do.
I was fired once and it was the best thing that ever happened to me, without that experience I wouldn't be where I am today both physically and mentally. I learned a lot from being fired and how not to treat people from the ***wipe that did it. Today I have to occasionally fire people but usually they know it is coming well before it ever happens, people tend to "quit by proxy". A couple weeks ago I had an interesting one though, the guy had been stealing from the company for a couple months and when we finally figured it out he was indignant and not the least remorseful. He is now sitting in jail, probably looking at some pretty significant time because it is not his first brush with the law. That one got to me more than any other because it was sudden and personal, I feel bad for his family.
I have had the experience of both being fired and doing the firing. At one of my jobs i was a warehouse manager for a beer distribution company and me and my boss did not see things the same. So one day he decided to fire me because i got to dirty in a days work and it wasn't professional looking. Mind you i worked in a warehouse and i was responsible for fixing the trucks trailers and forklifts if anything should go bad so dirt was part of the job. As far as doing the firing i never had a problem doing it cause i would always give the employees ample time and chances to turn there act around. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
I am a security guard, have been for 15 years. I can tell u i get plenty of training. What u need to know is security is a deterrent for someone who may have bad intentions. Security guards have no authority two arrest anyone. But i have two be licensed in illinois two practice what i do. And i have two do mandatory training and refesher courses every year. Sometimes the job is not worth it, other times it is.
Thanks Steve, that means a lot The hardest part of this was that it was two days before my 40th birthday and the wife was going through a difficult pregnancy. Two days later on my 40th we found out she was going to miscarry the baby so I lost a job and child within 72 hours. It took me a week to get my mind sorted out but it appears this is going to be a blessing in disguise for the most part. I was paid by Verizon Wireless until last Friday but didn't report to work. I had a month to find another job in the company and nothing I wanted to do opened up. I did apply for quite a few jobs and found that there were some jobs out there after all. I start a new job this coming Monday after the holiday and will be working Mon-Fri which I haven't had in years and will be making more per year salary wise. I will take a 5k hit when you factor the bonus payout but VZW will owe me 31k in severance, 4.5k in bonus money ytd and 4.5k in unused vacation time. So I will be out of work without pay for a week but will have a pre tax check for 41k coming and will have a paycheck at the new job a little after two weeks from now. The new job is also with a growing company that will allow me the possible opportunity to grow unlike VZW which is going backwards. Even with 1.8 Billion in 2nd quarter profits VZW is laying off 15-20% of Call Center Management with more to come, I like my odds at the new company a lot more
Owning a small business, i have had to fire plenty of times. Its hard for me because I only employ 4 or 5 people and we all get really close, but when someone isn't pulling their weight, it has to be done or my business goes down the tubes. Just had to fire someone yesterday. He didn't even act like he cared though, so it wasn't too hard.
Does getting caught up in a mass layoff count as "fired"? I was laid off once, but got called back after a few months. The only other time I was "let go" ironically enough had stemmed from the only time I had to fire someone. We'll preface this story with the fact that I'd grown to loathe my job for about a year heading into this situation. I was told I had to let go one of my 3 employees. I made my decsion based on a LONG history of incompetence and aversion to difficult work displayed by employee "A". My boss chose to let go a different employee "B" based on ONE incident where the employee showed initiative and picked up the slack on a difficult job that employee "A" had left undone. Unfortunately he did mess it up, but he tried, and it's likely employee "A" would have failed also. Well, I made it clear to employee "B" that it was not my decision during his exit. My boss didn't find that amusing, so I proceeded to let my boss know what I thought of him and his decision making abiliities (or lack there of). 2 days later I happily danced out the door after been given my "release". That was 6+ years ago, and i am SOOOO much farther ahead than where I would be if I stayed in that dump.
I have fired dozens of people in my career .... I am not a tyrant, so when it was time for them to go, it was not hard as it was well documented and it was never personal ... if you let the rules put them out, then it is the system and not a person doing it. I was fired once because 2 of my employees could not get along and somehow I ended up as the scapegoat. I had tried to terminate one of them but the owner's son was gettin jiggy with it with her and he was the one that let me go. A few months later, I was begged back by the owner with a substantial pay increase ... and that girl was gone ...
Never been fired or let go. I've been pretty fortunate too, because I've taken some big job moves up in the past several years that I didn't really know if I could handle at the time I've accepted them. Luckily every one of those moves has panned out well for me so far. I've been directly managing guys now for about a year and a half. I haven't had to fire anyone yet.....but it's probably going to happen soon. In sales, you can't show up late when your not hitting your number. I've got one that clearly doesn't understand this after several discussions. If your at 120% of your number, then feel free to come and go as you please.......but when your at 50% of your number you are already on thin ice. Showing up late every day and only working 7.5 hours isn't acceptable with me when your clearly not contributing your share of the numbers.
