Doesn't anyone use the Baracuta?? I picked one up at Cabelas this season and got both hunting and filet blades. Multipurpose seemed like just the ticket for me. Haven't had a chance to use it as yet. Hope I still have all my fingertips after I do.
If buying new the torch may be the way to go. I have two pirantas and about 93 blades left so I won't buy a knife or blades for literally a decade probably.
So do you guys carry another saw/knife for the briskit? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
Where did you get your blades from Trevor? I ordered 24 off of eBay last night. Figured if I ordered the 100 pack I would loose them before using them all.
You said these knives were pretty thin. I usually cut through the briskit when field dressing. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
Gotcha. I never cut through the brisket. Never really saw a need to. I just reach up in there, grab the windpipe and cut it off.
If im not mounting, I cut through it. I always used heavy duty knives custom made by my stepdad, they are a bit cumbersome at times but they cut right through the briskit without loosing it's edge. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
That's cool. I love a good heavy knife as well. I really like the Havalon for caping bucks out, which is what I use it the most for.
Isn't it basically a fancy scalpel? Iv used scalpels for camping before but not sure I would like it for skinning/quartering chores
I honestly don't use it for quartering animals. I carry actual boning knives from the meat department at our grocery stores. I like a longer stiffer blade for quartering.
Depends on where I'm at. I carry a fixed blade knife for backup but will generally use the havalon for everything, quatering included. If I am back at the house and quartering I use a fixed blade.
I purchased the bolt this year. I gave my torch to a friend after I use it the first time. It has a better (larger) handle and it's blades are thicker. I feel it holds a better edge. I've only ran one blade through it so far. Skinned out two for shoulder mounts and gutted the last deer with the same blade. Blade was done before I was finished up on the last deer but I got through it. I did buy the de-boning blades for my Havalon fillet knife. I l like'm!
I try not to use knife much when skinning because I occasionally brain tan hides and a score can be a real pain when fleshing/graining, but the main reason would be that I prefer cutting through joints as opposed to sawing bones and I'm not good enough to do it without a little prying some times. Also I prefer a knife be more multi purpose as opposed to "just" a skinning knife. I will admit, it's nearly impossible to get a knife scalpel sharp, and for the fine detail work of caping it's impossible to beat a scalpel. I may buy one just for that, my metal handled scalpel can get uncomfortable
It will definitely take some getting used too. I don't think you could make a better investment under $40
i found the torch that is supposed to be 20 dollars more than the piranta on amazon for the same price it should be here monday, cant wait to use it in the field!!
I used the Bolt and Barracuta over the weekend helping skin and quarter a deer and they were both really nice, super sharp and overall very impressed with them. So I ended up ordering the Bolt and got a really good deal on it. They had a Halloween sale going on and a $10 promo code (still going on) which got me a new knife for 40 dollars shipped can't wait to use it on a deer of my own soon!
I bought my blades on eBay about 3-4 years ago when they first became popular. If around home I always have a saw and thick knife as well. Backpacking very far in and my two havalons are it.
