Then I have been pissing and a buck came in. I was able to get a kill shot off of him thou. Stopped pissing close the 16 oz bottle tea bottle and grab bow, ----- still hanging out, shot and score

It's a good thing I don't snore. Back in 1995 I was set up in a box stand on our property in Holly Springs, Mississippi. I had gotten to the stand a good hour or more before first light, loaded my 30-30, chambered a round and let the hammer down. This particular stand is about 10ft up over a little patch of brush, and about the same distance from an old logging road we called the 10 point highway. There's very little pressure on the property, since most of it is almost completely overgrown. There's so much sanctuary it's ridiculous. Because of that, and the fact that so few people hunt that land, deer walk right down the middle of the road. Not a care in the world, just wide open and in broad daylight, right up until the very end of the season. There is at least one deer taken from that stand every year.

So the plan was to set up before sunrise, and hopefully ambush something tasty when they came out of the junk to head for water. Since the highway was clear and ran almost straight back through the property, I knew I'd be able to see anything coming up that way LONG before they spotted me... Like I said, that was the plan. Unfortunately, that's not what happened at all.

I don't know when exactly I dozed off, but at about 8am, I woke up to the sound of twigs snapping and leaves rustling below me. Somehow I managed to maintain my composure despite only being awake for 30 seconds or so. VERY slowly, I raised my head and picked up my rifle. It seemed to take forever, but I finally managed to get my gun up, and miraculously, the 5 deer milling around below me either didn't see me moving, or they just didn't care. It wasn't a monster, but the six pointer was obviously the big man on campus, and that's the one I wanted. I tucked that Winchester into my shoulder, locked my crosshairs on a spot just behind his arm pit, and started squeezing the trigger. Tighter and tighter, I squeezed until my fingertip was white, but the shot just wouldn't go off. Finally, I remembered I had let the hammer down. Very carefully, I eased my thumb to the hammer to reset it. The clicks of that hammer may be the loudest thing I've ever heard. I'm convinced there were deer two counties over that heard that racket, and I swear it was loud enough to make my ears ring.

Okay, so maybe I'm exaggerating how loud it was, but at the time, it was the only sound I could hear, and the deer below me DEFINITELY heard it. Remember on Looney Tunes when the roadrunner would take off at a dead sprint, and just vanish in a puff of smoke? Yeah. It was just like that. And remember the confused look on the coyote's face when it happened? I can totally relate.

Yep. Last year I was goofing around on my phone when a nice buck came strolling through. By the time I realized what was going on, it was too late.

In my defense, it was the first day of season around 11am. What buck goes for a walk then?

Happened this past sunday to me. I was texting some of the others guys hunting with me and got focused on the texting. I heard something walking under me and thought it was squirrel but when i looked down 8 yards from me was the biggest doe i've ever seen. from where i first seen her i believe she walked through shooting lane i had before i seen her. If i wouldve looked up maybe 30-45 seconds before i wouldve more than likely killed a doe that wouldve what i believe went 150-175lbs.

Not that I've realized anyways... But I'm sure I have.

Sometimes I think maybe it helps me, for 2 reasons.

    1) It's hard for me to sit perfectly still when I'm just looking around. I move quick and don't think much about it. When I'm playing with my phone I tend to sit very still with minimal movement, other than just my head and eyes a bit- I'm sure that has helped me not be seen by deer a time or two.

    2) Some of those early morning sits, my phone is the only thing that keeps me alert and awake- definitely seeing more deer than I would be if I was cat-napping.

The only time I get busted is when I am moving to get my phone out of my pocket or to put it away. Been busted a few times by bucks that I had yet to see due to being distracted by the phone:/

Same here. This will be my first year with a smart phone though, so we'll have to wait and see.

Last week I was on my phone listing something on craigslist.
I look up and 3 Toms jump out of the brush in front of me.I put my phone in my pocket. Don't have time to range them take a guess at 30 and shot right under the biggest Tom I have ever seen. He was at 35.

When I was younger hunting from the ground I started to take a leak. My buckle made a noise and a doe blew at me and took off from behind. It would of been a 10yd shot. That was before smart phones. Now that I have one I'm sure it'll happen soon enough.

It happened to me today, I was making a post on my Thrill Driven Outdoors Facebook page about all the work that goes into self filming and as I was putting my phone away I noticed a mature doe crossing behind me at 10yds never even heard her, BUT she came back through about an hr later and there was much different result! BDD! First filled tag of the year!

I have not lost one that I am aware of because of my phone but I'm willing to bet I've slept through a few opportunities.

Happened 3 weeks ago while I was on here. It was a doe.

Some may remember my first bow kill post. I look back and laugh at it. I got busted by a doe an was venting on here. Look up and there was a deer at 20 coming in. I grabbed my bow and had an arrow through him before I knew it. It was pretty sweet how that one worked out.

Last Saturday when I killed the doe, I was in my phone and missed the opportunity at one. Then 20 min later after deciding I was done with my phone in the stand, I shot one.

I'm going to try really hard to not have it out as much this year.

I can't recall if I've gotten busted while on the phone but I'm sure it's happened. I was just thinking yesterday while on stand that I spend waaaaay too much time on my phone passing the time. Some deer are going by undetected, I'm sure of it. Need to lay off the phone a bit!

Well I'm not advocating leaving your phone at home, although we got by a lot of years without them, but if it's there, it is a great temptation to start messing around with it after you've sat there for hours. As far as my phone goes, I really have to be conservative with it's use because I only get about 4-5 hours out of the battery because it's constantly searching for signal. Now my Yahtzee game, well that's another story. I definitely pay it too much attention.

    Blessings........Pastorjim

This has not happened to me yet on my phone, but last season I was studying my pharmacology flashcards and a doe walked in on me. I was busted as I slowly put them in my pocket. 2 weeks later the same thing happened. After the second time they had me pegged in that stand and wouldn't come in even if I sat stone still. Had to move my stand for this season.

Not to hijack the thread, but what are you going to school for?
