Then "they" can sign up for this and still be way ahead.

It won't be socially awkward anymore when everyone is like that.

teenagers have always been socially awkward

at least the internet and cell phones have now allowed the socially awkward kids to have their own little community where they feel safe to no longer be socially awkward

Social media has harmed interpersonal skills of many. SMS has really degraded the ability of many to spell. I see other students' papers in college and can hardly decipher what they are trying to say. My daughter in law prefers text messaging people over speaking to them. It took a lot of work to get her to stop texting even though I informed her I considered it rude to text versus taking the time to call, especially with family.

That absurd. The majority of conversations are quick questions or comments and can easily be answered by text. I much prefer someone text me if it's just a casual question or comment.

Now if you want to discuss something important or catch up, yeah, please call me, but just a casual comment/question? Please text.

This was about our youth learning or not social skills.. It was not about the technology per se...

Kids still go to school, correct? Which is where most kids learn their social skills.

Homeschooling is much more dangerous to your kids social skills than technology.

And you can communicate with several people without having to wait for them to answer a phone.

I've been trying to buy a camper. One I found I could not get the the seller to answer the damn phone. If I could have texted him, he could have answered at his leisure. I quit trying and bought from someone that answered texts.:)

Agreed. They may learn quite well but they develop virtually no social skills.

Right.. they go to school with their face burners..

So how many teenagers have you been in school with lately Hook..

Most classes don't allow personal conversations during class.. on breaks and lunches the burners run rampant..

At least thats what I hear from teacher friends..

We have an apprentice here that is fresh out of high school that is very shy and has the social skills of a lemon. He can't even answer simple direct questions. Not good in a shop environment. He needs to change fields or learn to communicate for sure.

I just don't think it's harming their social skills. It's just a different form of being social.

what's sad is a parent thinking that they have to give their pre-teen an IPhone so they "fit in socially". If that isn't a statement on today's society....its all about the Jones'. Next you'll have to buy her a BMW.

It's doing harm. How many times has someone spoke to you in text lingo when having a face to face conversation? I absolutely hate it when someone says O-M-G, just the letters not the actual words in a person to person conversation.

I have bumped into my fair share of people, not just kids who cannot disconnect from their phones long enough to function properly in society. That is the problem, hiding behind phones & computers instead of getting out & actually talking to people & having good people/social skills outside electronics.

I didn't really read the entire thread, but the main thing I see is how much it hurts kids writing ability. They will write like they text or communicate on social media, and it's horrible. Using; lol, thx, u, <3, tomro, etc. In everyday writing lessons or a professional PowerPoint for presentation.
