Has the wave of technological dependence and social media over the past 15 years set back our youth?

How many teenagers do you know that don't have their own smart phone?

I personally see youth texting, social media sites, and video games as having a direct effect on our youth's ability to learn proper social skills.

I think as a result of all this connectivity and technology they are failing to learn acceptable person to person interactions skill that are vital in life.

    Thoughts?

I don't know how anyone could argue that it hasn't.

Yes and no. We may not like it but they are learning how things will be done in the near future.

I think there are pluses and minuses. I have daughters at the ages of 14 and 11 and they each have I-Phones and computers.

    +:
I know where they are at all times. My parents guessed or hoped.
    They use it for school.
    They fit in socially.
They add to the family video and picture album.
It's a great safety and awareness tool.
    -:

    It's expensive.
It can be used too much at times.
    It takes away from creativity.

tfox - It is sad to think that our future hold very little person to person interaction where all one does is stare into a screen.....

I agree, but it is the wave of the future.

Just look how much we buy and never speak to a live person via the internet.

You know it's sad when they can operate any communication device but can't do a simple problem solving equation. This is the part of technology that is hurting us. People are becoming more & more disconnected to reality & live more their lives through a device of some type.

Personally I limit my kids access to such devices. I know they need to use them but I do not want them to rely solely on them to get through life.

I would not allow either of my daughters to have cell phone until they could pay for it themselves. By then they were very socially adjusted in my opinion.

They had computers with internet for school, but they had limits on usage that I enforced.

I can see your point. But, the way we did it is with my oldest daughter, is we got her a phone when she was 10. Specifically so we could get in contact with her when she was at a friend's house. Or for emergencies. We taught her how to be responsible. She is thirteen now, and yes she has a FB acct, but I would not say it rules her life. Both of my daughters are active in dance, bowling, fishing, and my oldest has her own bow and cannot wait till she can pull back 35 lbs (DE state min. draw weight) and go hunt with me.

I think it's incredibly ironic that this is being discussed on an internet forum of all places........lol.

I wonder if people said the same thing about telephones in the early 1900's? Maybe people were saying things like below back then...........haha.

"It is sad to think that our future hold very little person to person interaction where all one does is talk into a plastic handset"

You can't deny that it increases productivity. We can have meetings over the internet instead of flying cross country, we can e-mail our drawings instead of snail mailing them, on it goes.

They still will have parents and friends and classmates and brothers/sisters and Teachers to interact with. It is the future like it or not.

How do you think people in 1900 would feel about books becoming obsolete?

I think the discussion of if technology is useful and if technology can cause socially awkward kids are two totally different discussions.

I love technology and 100% agree that it is good and can increase productivity. On the other hand, I see that youth being totally reliant on technology will cause them social awkwardness.

I'd be curious on everyone's opinion on the video I posted.
