Has anyone ever planted carrots in a food plot. I was doing a little light reading and saw that carrots have a good amount of phosphorus, calcium and vitamin A, all of which are important in growing big bone. I haven't seen anyone ever comment about them, so I thought I'd ask.
Not that I know of. They don't produce much to browse on above the ground and most deer won't know what they are. It may take some educating to get them to eat them. just because they are good for them doesn't mean they will eat them. Think back to your childhood!!
John, I LOVED carrots, especially fresh out of the garden. I understand your point though. I'm just looking for something that will not only be nutritious for them, but also something that will keep bringing them back. I'm going to put in field peas and soybeans in one plot, but looking for something "fresh" to put in the others. I've considered everything from napa cabbage to.....carrots.
I just planted a Cabelas plot mix that was Chicory, Carrots, Alfalfa, and Turnips. It came up great. I won't know if the deer will like it though. It may be a while before I see any results. It's also in a newly built food plot so the deer may not touch anything right away no matter what is there.
I think in the plot just north of the house I'm going to plant a mixture of wheat, rye, oats and barley. Down at the other end where Schultzy will be, peas and soybeans. Clover on the fire breaks and I still have to figure out what to put in the last little plot. Anyway with the smorgasbord I'm offering, they should be happy.
I heard about carrots in a few mixes out there. I plant carrots in my garden along with some food plot seed and in my 5 years gardening , deer by me never touched the carrots. Try it out and let us know.
I planted a brassica mix from frigid forage last year that had forage carrots in it. It was called Big-N-Beasty.....The deer seemed to like them. They ate the carrot tops before the turnips or beets got ripe
