I knew there was talk about this a while ago, but I couldn't find the thread (partially because I'm a bit lazy). I just registered for one on June 1st. My brother, and three of my friends along with a few of his friends are all doing it. Definitely have different waves of emotions for it. I was super excited, then a bit nervous, then excited. :D I've watched a ton of videos already. Everything from basic course videos to tips and walkthroughs. I'm in pretty solid shape. I'm not near as big as most guys, but I'm fit. I need to work on my cardio a bit more (just been working on interval training all winter), and maybe incorporate more run/lift training this spring (hill repeats followed by pushups, then back into a run, etc). I know that you really aren't "running" much for long periods of time, so cardio isn't a concern. The mental part is what worries me. In particular, these two obstacles look terrible: I would love to hear your input if you've done one. Tips are also welcomed:D
I haven't done one, but I am looking at doing a Mud factor this summer. I'm planning on working on cardio, core and strength training by running and suspension training. Something like the TRX. http://www.mudfactor.com/
I've been trying to get a group together for awhile now to do a TM, but most of my friends have become lame. I have a small group committed for the next TM in Houston of October of next year. We will see if that works out. From what I've heard from people that have done it, it's really not that hard, especially for cardio. You will be waiting awhile at each station, so you have plenty of breaks. The toughest part will be the mental part of it with the cold bathes and the electroshock therapy obstacles.
That's what I've heard, too, Hooker. I can run 6 -7 miles comfortably (not 6min/miles, but 8-8:30 for sure), and 7-7:30min/mile pace for 3 miles. I lift 3 times a week as well. One thing I'm considering is adding in circuit training. Here's what the "official" Tough Mudder site recommends: http://toughmudder.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/tough-mudder-boot-camp.pdf The problem is, doing this three times a day, and leaving the other three for regular cardio, I would have to scrap my regular lifting routine. Not sure I will keep my strength level where I want it with circuit training. Fitness guys have any thoughts?
I haven't done a Tough Mudder, but I just registered for the NY Northface Challenge 50k. The entire race is on trails in the mountains. Myself, my dad, and a few buddies from his work are doing it more as a forced march/hike. Our goal is to just finish. I've always lifted and ran on a regular schedule, but I've been mixing in the stair master for cardio, that thing is awesome.
Hook, there is one in Georgia this September. Of course that would mean you'd need to drive through Bama... http://www.thenorthface.com/en_US/endurance-challenge/?stop_mobi=yes
Just ran a spartan race with 3 friends today, it was a freakin blast. You can walk it, jog it or really push yourself and try and kill it. I will hurt tomorrow. The run is not very far, but it was 35 degrees and the water was a ...... I then ran the junior spartan with my daughter, she killed it. We had a blast and I would recommend anyone to run these.
These types of challenges/ races are definitely something I would like to complete. There's a Spartan Race in Wisconsin this October. Thinking about registering for it if I can get my friends to join.
I haven't done one of these yet but it is one in the next year or two that I want to try atleast once.
Yeah, I'm pretty interested to see how it goes. I was looking into circuit/crossfit specific routines to help prep for it, but I've read a lot of people said just KISS and stick with strength conditioning, build cardio endurance, and throw in HIT or modified HIT, so since that's basically what I've been doing for a few years, I'm going to continue that but focus on longer distance runs/hill workouts and trail running. Yesterday was the first day I ran outside and for a little longer distance all winter. Did 4.5 miles at 7:27 pace. Since it's not about speed at the event, I want to try to see what distance I can go at 9min/miles. I think I can hit 6 or 7 just fine right now.
There a Spartan race up in Marseilles (sp) in July, been trying to get team for one of these for while but none of my friends are real big into doin this kind of stuff ha. Think there's a TM around this area this fall also. It be fun to do either one.
Yeah, I noticed that one too. Its closer to me than the one in Madison. Im seriously considering signing up if my friends dont chicken out.
Yea that's my problem with doin any type a race like that, I'd like to try one jus for the challenge to see how bad out of shape I'm getting compared to almost six years out of Corps ha. I still run and everything but we did obstacle courses a lot and it was always kinda fun. That one and the TM in St Louis are closest I've seen for this year tho
I've always wanted to try tough mudder just haven't pulled the trigger on it. I will be doing a color run this yr. Not exactly sure what it is my girlfriend signed us up. Sent from my SGH-T959 using Xparent Green Tapatalk 2
A color run is where you run a 5k, and at the end, they spray you with paint. It's basically the new way for a tie dye shirt.
