Has anyone been diagnosed with laryngopharyngeal reflux?

I'm curious if anyone has been diagnosed with this type of reflux which is different than GERD. Essentially (supposedly) LPR usually occurs without burning and pressure in the chest like GERD, but rather results in symptoms that effect the larynx and throat. Hoarseness, post-nasal drip feeling, difficulty swallowing, constantly clearing throat, etc are all common symptoms.

Reason I'm asking is I've been experiencing some of these symptoms on and off since the fall, and I haven't bothered to go in for an appointment with my doctor up until about two weeks ago at which point he prescribed taking a Zantac twice a day for two weeks to see if it resolves the issue. So far, nada. I always feel like GERD (and acid reflux in general) are blanket diagnosis's like IBS. Not that they're not real, but often, they have symptoms that are so vague, they could be related to 10 other illnesses.

No one I know has heard of this, let alone known someone who has it. It's a long shot, but has anyone here had it, or known someone who has? If so, what were the symptoms like and what treatment was used?

Not 100% sure if its the same, but i uave a cousin that has had similar symptoms. She ended up having surgery, sorry i dont know the exact details. Her main thing was while eating she had to slow way down and almost choked several times. I can find out more if you would like for me to.

Definitely (if you don't mind, and she doesn't). Would be greatly appreciated.

I've had GERD for 20+ years. Started out with Losec and then Prilosec, sleeping with my chest and head slightly elevated and watching what I eat. Rarely do I have any symptoms anymore and usually when I do it's my fault for eating something I shouldn't have.

MGH, I am sorry you are having issues. However, I am glad that you posted this thread. It reminds me that I need to be checked. About 6 months ago my dentist told me that a couple of my teeth were getting worn down not from chewing, but from acid reflux when I slept. I haven't done a darn thing about it and I know I should b/c I don't want to have any problems with my throat and the likes. I am going to schedule and appt for next week based on this thread. I know you did not mean it, but thanks for posting this and I really hope what you are experiencing is minor.

Thanks for the information. Really appreciate it.

I'm not super worried at this point since I'm not losing weight, I'm still hungry as all get out, working out regularly, I don't smoke, and drink maybe one beer a week, etc. I'm hoping the odds play in my favor against esophageal cancer.

I just decided about a week ago I'm going to go in to have some similar stuff checked out. It seems whenever I'm done eating, for a good couple of hours afterwards it causes me to cough and clear my throat. I have no burning or pressure in my chest, but greasy foods definitely trigger it as well much more so than something light. Laying down or kicking back in a recliner makes it worse, and popping a tums will fix it almost instantly. I've experienced this on and off for a couple of years, but never really thought it was a big deal until recently. I'm due for a physical and some blood work anyhow, so I might as well discuss with my PCP.

I had similar issues as just about all of you guys in the past.. even went so far as to end up loosing weight as I couldn't eat foods without feeling sick with heartburn that lasted hours.

The docs gave pill after pill.. and even did an endoscopy.. in the end I felt like none of them were really attacking the problem.. but merely throwing drugs at my symptoms.

So.. I took matters into my own hands.. and got healthy.

I cut out fatty foods.. ALL soda.. ALL caffeine.. and ALL milks (I'd have cheese here and there but no milk whatsoever). These foods are the hardest on your tummy. Oh.. no alcohol either.

Then.. I started eating veggies like crazy.. and ONLY drinking water.. added fruits and stuck to more natural foods with less additives and preservatives in them - whole foods.

I'm not going to lie.. it sucked.. and I stuck to it for about 13 months.. and then one day I woke up better than ever.. with a stomach I feel that hasn't felt so good since I was a kid.

Today.. I eat what I want.. except I still very very rarely have a soda.. or caffeine.. (just got used to not having them).

But I've never been better.. and I owe it to my diet above all else.

The docs can give you pills to cover symptoms.. but they never cure the problem.

The process takes time.. and to be honest more patience then most people have.. but its well worth it in the end.

If you ask me.. this process was a huge blessing.. I'd rather have had the problem and conquered it at 29.. then have it sneak up when I'm an old man.

AWSOME advice...I have acid reflux/heartburn in my family. I am not sure that is even medically possible, but we do. I was in pretty good to above average shape most of my life. I could get heartburn from a glass of water. I tried all the docs medicine, sleeping upright, upside down etc...Finally about 5 years ago I decided to simply eat better. Fresh foods, and mostly just decided to do what Duke listed above. I can now hit a Mexican restaurant, eat spicy salsa, onions, etc and never have an issue. I would say it has been 3 years or so since I had heartburn at all. Sometimes I eat really hot stuff, even if the taste is average because for most of my life.....I couldn't.

Thanks guys. I do eat fairly well and always excercise a lot. My diet could be better for sure, but I don't drink or smoke or really eat fast food. I could stand to improve my vegetable intake and drink much more water.
