    Heh.. heh..

I must have about 10,000 sq ft of garden. This is just a portion of what we pulled out last week.
Looks like I'll have plenty of winter squash and tomatoes to go with my venison. (if'n I get some fresh venison)

Mom and K eating fresh from the garden sweet corn and tomatoes. We also had fresh jalapenos stuffed with bacon and cheese.

Very cool. You must do a ton of canning.

Beautiful chickens too, I wish I could have a few here ,but the city frowns upon it .
Plus my dog might find them irresistible lol.

What do you do with that squash? I have never had any of that variety.

We have a decent-sized garden every year, too... nothing that big though.

Japanese beetles killed us this year, along with the constant wet weather. Didn't get NEARLY as many tomotoes as we usually do, and we had 20 plants!!

I'm so glad this wasn't a bunch of deer kills. It's a real harvest. Alright Christine. I'm lovin' it.

buckeye, they're kabocha, a japanese type of pumpkin. They're a lot like buttercup squash. Sweet orange flesh with texture a bit like a baked chestnut. We eat lots of them and we planted a bunch this year to see if my mom could sell them to her friends up by the city. She already sold all that she took. She's coming back down in two weeks to get more. Should end up with several hundred dollars for them. Not bad for a hobby garden. We could plant about 2 acres of them if we got really ambitious...

Greg, our tomatoes took forever to get ripe and lots of them turned red and got squishy at the same time. Just a bad year for tomatoes. I did end up with several bushels of them. Didn't have a lot of plants.... but each plant had several carp underneath of them so they were big plants.

I tried planting canaloupe this year and they didn't do diddly. I had one almost get ripe and the dog ate it.

Japanese beetles were bad this year but not as bad as year's past. I put a Japanese beetle lure in the chicken run. The chickens absolutely love 'em. If there weren't so many hawks around, I'd let the chickens loose in the garden.

Bitterman, I've never canned anything. I have a pressure cooker and I bought some jars... but usually I just freeze stuff. (have four freezers that get turned on as needed.) I really need to start canning tho. It would save on electricity and be a bit more convenient that rooting around through the freezers. The chickens are great. Bummer that you can't have some. My lab is amazingly disinterested in them.

    Thanks Davidmil. :)

We canned 27 quarts of tomatos this year. That was my focus, grow tomatos and can them up. You don't need the pressure cooker to can tomatos. They can be done in a hot water bath (boiling) for 45 minutes. I suggest peeling the skin off but it isn't required.

We currently have 18 barred rocks. I love having chickens. We're gonna go down to 13 for the winter. 5 of them are headed for the stew pot and canning.

We can tons of stuff. Stew, soup, chili, jam, meatballs, meat and gravy. Whenever we make anything we try to make at least 10 quarts, 3 to eat right away and 7 for the canner. Canning is really easy after you do it a couple of times and set up a system. You definitely should start.

Looks amazing! I would love to have access to fresh produce like that! The closest I can get here in downtown Chicago is our farmers markets that come through 2x a week during the season.....
