So far where I live we have about 2 ft of snow on the ground everywhere, more if your counting drifts. To go along with that we have had some bitter cold temperatures that have lasted weeks at a time, sometimes well into the -30's. Its looking like it may be a rough winter for the deer this year and may have to expect a higher amount of winter kill unfortunately. Hows it looking in your neck of the woods?
I'm in the same boat as you brother. Central MN has had it better than NW MN but its still bad. We have deer coming into the yard to our crabapple/apple trees. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
We`ve been hit here on Long Island with a foot of snow yesterday, and temps are 5 degrees. For us here thats freezing the norm is I believe is about 30 degrees. Cold here too, and last week we were hit with same cold and snow.
It's been a horrible winter as far as snowfall goes. Most of it is melted. Which is going to make for a bad hunting season. We're only projected three more storms between now and March. Sent from my SAMSUNG Infuse 4G
Looking like 3-4 more inches tonight... at least the temperature is going to stay in the single digits for a while sounds like
I think the length of the winter has a larger effect on whitetails. They're well equipped to handle the cold, but the limitation of food is really hard on them.
Winter Kill The deer can deal with the snow for the most part, it's the rain that makes the snow crusty & tough to get threw to the feed.Specialy when the snow gets 3 feet deep. I found 3 deer last week that the yotes got. There easy prey for the yotes then too.The cold for the most part isin't a factor for a whitetail or a mulie. Rocky
Its bad weather in KY too! . . And we're not used to the cold here! We've had 2 days so far of -4°, and the next couple days its suppose to be below 0° for the low. . Yesterday we had winds 25 to 30 mph and I don't even know what the windchill was! We got 6'' of snow last Tuesday and 3'' yesterday and the snow hasn't melted at all because we haven't been above 15° in over a week and a half. The deer are having a hard time trying to find something the eat with all of the snow on . . I still have a mineral block out and the deer are coming to it heavy! . . I just hope they can find something to eat! Why don't deer eat ''wild ferns'' ? . . We have A LOT of them around here and I never see deer eating them. The weather man said this is the worse winter since the 70's! Global warming my rear end! :p
With that much snow the deer will have NO issues finding food. We are currently in a blizzard warning... 5" of fresh snow yesterday which makes it close to 24" for the year. -50 wind chill projected once again. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Length of season and ice/rain are the toughest part, but cold and numerous days of negative temps (-50 wc next 2 days) are a different story.
