Last night was my first time to draw back on a deer since I began bowhunting three years ago. I had a young buck 10 yards from my stand. I aimed a grunt high for the angle and let it fly. I hit my mark and he bolted to the woods. I gave him 2 hrs then tracked in for 3 hrs on decent blood only to come up empty handed. Like I said before, this one was hard to swallow.

Well.... how was your shot? What would you have hit where the arrow was? It obviously sounds as if it was not a immediate lethal hit. Sounds as if you wee pushing him possibly and after 100 yards or so would of been best to get out and give him some time. Sorry about not finding him but 3 hours in my opinion is hardly enough to come up short.

My shot was perfect left and right and just a grunt high, but still ok bc of the drastic angle. (He was literally under the stand). I gave him 2 hours before I went back and 3 hours (400 yrds) later we couldnt find any blood. I made a sweep of the general area this morning for 2 more arrows but a heavy rain came in last night that stopped us from tracking and i guess it washed away any remaining blood.

If the angle was that high, I'm guessing it was a single lung hit. Are there tracking dogs in your area?
