Easiest way for me is to get the steps setup. Then hang a hook on the tree where you plan on hanging the stand. Now you can either go up and pull the stand and hang it on the hook then strap it to the tree or hang another hook about a ft higher then the first one and throw a rope over the top hook and from the ground pull up the stand then tie the rope to another tree then climb and the stand will be up there already.
Think a lot of it has to do with the type of stand you are hanging. I have an easier time with LW stands them I do some of my other stands. What kind are you using? Sent from my BNTV600 using Tapatalk 4
This is something that get's easier as you do it more... And something you really need is a linemans belt... This gives you use of both hands while in the tree so you don't have to hug the tree with one arm while trying to do everything else with the other.
I use a rope and pulley system that I put together a few years ago. That way you're not trying to climb with a stand strapped to you somehow. Whatever system you come up with, get a lineman's belt that attaches to your safety harness so you can have both hands free for working. Please don't ever climb without being secured in some way, even if you're just hanging stands. Blessings........Pastorjim
Scott, do you have an adult that might be able to help you? Obviously, you're just getting started bowhunting judging from your previous posts and your age. That's great!!, but I think you may have a better and safer experience with an experienced adult guide to get you going. My son is also 14, I'd hate to think of him hanging and climbing into a tree stand on his own without someone showing him the right way. I also don't know if my son has enough strength to fasten the straps adequately to keep him safe, then you've got the proper way to strap yourself in. We'd all love to help, but there's only so much we can do from our keyboards. If your folks don't hunt, maybe ask them if they have a friend who does. He'd probably be thrilled to take you out and show you the ropes. You can look at the numerous posts from members that did that very thing and enjoyed it. Treestands aren't as simple as climbing a tree. They can be very dangerous, and you need to take the necessary precautions, but if you don't know what they are and how to do them, it's difficult to do it the right way.
Thank you, I do know hoe to strap the stand in and fasten it cause I did it about 8 feet up in mybackyard, but I could reach thtt high. I just wanted to know how to get the stand up higher, yes my dad will help me hang the stand, and hes not a hunter but he does have friends that are going to be taking me. but I have a very large common ground that i go to myself thats only 1 min away, so I wanted to hang a stand their.
What are you using to climb the tree with? Screw in steps work great, they are cheap, but extremely dangerous, they are nicknamed "gut hooks" for a reason... I would suggest getting a set of climbing sticks if you don't have any... Guide gear has a set for $36 if your a member.
right now I am using the screw in steps but i might get the climbing sticks... why are they dangerous?
If you were to fall or even just slip... whether your hooked to a tether or not... imagine all your weight coming down on one of those steps...."Gut hook". It's going to hurt if not tear you open.
Scott, looks like you have a good attitude to start with. Asking for advise and actually listening to the answers. Keep this up and you'll learn a lot and have a promising hunting future.
Get yourself some sticks, I saw some at wallyworld for $30. These will make it alot easier. Either use the safety harness that comes with your stand or get a vest type harness and linemans belt. Once you get the sticks find your tree you want to hang it in. With some assistance put your sticks in the tree, with your linemans belt attatched. I like to have my stand tied to a rope and keep the rope with me as I climb and secure the sticks. Pull your stand up with the rope to the top,(your linemans belt will help here as it allows the use of both hands) hang your stand and ensure it is sturdy, then while still strapped to your linemans belt tie off a lifeline if you have one(i just started using these and they are a must have even easy to make) above your stand. If you do not have a lifeline then attatch a safety strap to hook up your harness to. Have fun and remember safety is the first priority.
