Handshaking going by the wayside as a custom? Is it non hygienic?

I have started seeing a lot of people refuse to shake hands and instead do that little "fist bump" thing b/c supposedly handshaking is non hygienic. I don't get it. People refuse to shake someone's hand and fist bump instead, yet they will hold onto the handrails at the mall, open up doors at 7-11, and touch things in a public bathroom......

I for one like the traditional handshake and think the little fist bump thing is a WEAK custom moving forward. Thoughts?

I am making it a goal to shake at least 20 different hands tomorrow at work.

If he can handshake some kid in a 3rd world country, then why are people scared to shake hands lately?

I won't refuse to shake someones hand, because to me that's disrespectful. I'm also not going to go out of my way to shake everyones hand that I see either. I wash my hands throughout the day. Easiest way to get sick IMO is having germs on your hands and contacting yourself and others. I can't afford to be sick for a minute. It isn't very hygienec when you think about it.

The fist bump thing is just another phase of the new "cool" thing to do. I see it as more of a thing in the sports world. It's quicker to bump someones fist rather than have a handshake. I dont' see Lebron running back on defense after a lob from Wade, stopping at half court to shake hands. Just replaces the high five IMO. For the record I'm not a fist bumper either. I think it's *****.

how many sick days do you have left?

I have been on mission trips to places like India and Central America. I never refused to touch anyone. I have even been to a leper colony in India. Yes the possibility exists that I may contract something someday but I'd rather live life and bring a smile to someone who feels hopeless when I can. I carry hand sanitizer with me and use it as soon as I am out of sight.

I was talking to a young man yesterday about trespassing with his motorcycle and when we finished our conversation we shook hands.

    I prefer a handshake.

Perhaps I am old and square but the way a person shakes your hand means something to me also.

Agreed, maybe not shaking a man's hand for fear of germs should have been put on Hooker's Thread about unmanly things.

I'm glad I live in the Midwest where people aren't afraid to shake hands. If you were to "fist bump" someone when you first meet them here, you would be looked at funny and frankly, thought less of.

People who are afraid to shake hands because of the germs have watched too many movies and listen to too much hype about killer viruses from the media.

I've never heard of people choosing to fist bump because it is more hygienic, or to replace a handshake. It is only done because it is "cool". Handshakes still rule the day where I live.

Handshakes are the way to go. It's just the way a real man addresses another man.

Is there anything worse than a sweaty, cold handshake? I immediately know that I will not give my business to any contractor or lab salesman if they have a sweaty handshake. Only exception is if they have a nice rack.

It's handshakes here in God's country. Nothing worse then a yuppie that shakes your hand and it feels like a toddler squeezing back. I give guys like that a bit of extra greeting just to let them know who's Alpha.

    I'm a handshake guy.

When I work with players of any age I always stress the importance of looking each other in the eyes and shaking hands like a man. I heard one guy say he likes the first-bump because "5-fingers together are stronger than 5 finger separate" and he uses is it as a metaphor for his HS basketball team so I guess I see the rationale there. Bottom line though, shake hands!

PS -- RockinChair can probably snap your hand with his handshake :D

Ah, so you're one of those guys who shakes my hand and I immediately think "This guy is a complete tool." Nothing wrong with a firm handshake, but when someone tries to squeeze the life out of my fingers I want to immediately punch them in the sac.

Handshake all the way. The thing I hate is when people go for the grasp too early, just catching your fingers and part of your knuckles. The you feel like a d****e

I would never turn down a handshake. My friends and I do a different form of the handshake but when meeting someone it always will start with a traditional handshake. But what is annoying is when someone gives you a very weak handshake and I feel like an a** because I give firm handshakes.

I think what you meant to think was, "This guy is so awesome. He just squeezed my hand and starred me down. He is the alpha male. I am submissive."

The term alpha males reminds me of Steroid Mike from Tosh.O. The video was probably too inappropriate to post here.

Vito.."I've never heard of people choosing to fist bump because it is more hygienic, or to replace a handshake"

I have. The last two jobs I have worked, many of the employees do the fist bump thing due to their perception of the people we work with every day.

NY.."how many sick days do you have left?"

3 to 4 months of sick leave......:)
