Any of you use a handheld GPS? If so, what features about it do you like the most?

I have a Garmin that I have used for many years. I like the waypoint feature to mark stand sites, wallows, etc. I also like the tracking feature so I can leave it on to see where I have gone and how to backtrack if necessary.

What type of Garmin do you use? I love these features too, but mine is an older one and doesnt get a good signal very often. Have been looking at getting a GARMIN GPSMAP 62 now

eTrex Legend. I have had it for quite a few years. I bought it when I went on my first wilderness caribou hunt and it was a real life saver. I used it to mark an elk wallow in New Mexico a few years ago. Problem was, I was nearly 50 miles from main camp and there was one wallow but three of us sharing a truck. Back at the main camp I gave the coordinates to a guy from Alaska that had his own transportation and he went there and killed a nice 6 x 6 the very first evening. We all went with him the next morning and helped pack it out. We are still friends and I have an open invite to come hunt Alaska with him.

I have also used the perimeter feature on it to figure acreage of food plots.

Thats awesome, Fletch! Mine is a etrex as well, but I do not believe a "legend" def going to have to make a new purchase pretty soon with all those cool features.

I tried using one last season but didn't like it. I carry paper maps with me and put them in big bags to stay dry. Plus most places I hunt I get good cell service so I use maps on my phone. Works good because I can swap between satellite view and topo maps and backs up all my saved points online.

I have a Garmin 62s with onXmaps chip. I like the strong signal, compass calibration on the fly, alarm clock, longest battery life, waypoint marking (the truck, points of interest, etc.), archived back tracking (where have I been and where do I need to go), buttons and not touch screen, time of day, sunset times and moon phases. Handy tool with no camera. Interfaces with other programs nicely.

Do you GPS owners prefer touchscreen or buttons?

It seems like it would be a pain to mark points on touchscreen while wearing gloves or when raining.

Bringing this back to the top. Pros and Cons of touch screens and buttons?
