I am hunting a large piece of public land and my sense of direction is not so great. I am looking at getting a GPS but I am not sure which ones are good. I am looking for something under $200 that I can mark treestands and get myself back to the truck. I really don't need anything too fancy. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Not sure if you would be able to find this one, but it is the one I have and it has since been discontinued by Garmin. Also I got it for around $200, not the $400 that Garmin lists it for on their site. Link It has been great for me and has a ton of good features.
I have had my Garmin 60CSX for a few years now and love it. Always has reception, even in my pack. It is a little bigger than some but I wouldn't trade it for anything except maybe the newer version, the 62csx I believe.
I found an older one on Craigslist for $50. It is a Garmin eMap. It does the job, but I have to be holding it in my hand. If I put in my pocket or backpack I lose satellite reception. It works for me. I take it with me whenever I am in the woods. If I find an area that looks promising I find a tree in that area and then mark it on the gps. It also has a "breadcrumbing" feature that allows you to follow your tracks back out if you want to.
