Hey guys I'm looking at hand held GPS units and I came across a like new Garmin 60CSx model. It's an older version but does anyone have experience with this model? I can pick it up pretty cheap. Just wondering if I should look at newer models or not. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
In addition to my gps app on my phone, I always like to carry a handheld gps unit. Out in the deep woods, the cellphone gps app can go haywire sometimes, so it is always best to carry a handheld gps. That being said, I lost my Garmin handheld gps last year after having it for a decade. Those things get great signal and are more reliable than cellphone apps. I'll probably be getting one as well here soon.
I'll be interested to see the responses. I've always thought about getting one and having the pre-programmed maps. Might be handy as I venture into more public land. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
GPS units are invaluable when running and gunning on larger tracks of land. I can hunt new spots just by reviewing them online via topo or aerials, enter the spots I choose onto my GPS, then head right into those spots.
This one looks similar to my gpsmap62st. I love mine. Like Brett said, cell phone apps can get wonky, whereas mine has always had strong signal. I haven't had any troubles at all with mine. I think the newer ones have some more features like touch screen, but I'd rather not have that anyway. Also, since it has a card slot, you can do some really cool things with putting Birdseye overlays on maps, etc. There is a guy on YouTube called DIY Sportsman that does an awesome video on that part. I think it's this one here. Check it out! How to Scout Deer on Public Land - YouTube
I think I went with the 64st. Avoided the touch screen as well because messing with my phone was hard enough. Big fan but I still have a lot to figure out. Probably using 20% of it's capabilities.
I own a Garmin 60CSx...at one time it was Garmin's flagship handheld device. It's a rock solid piece of equipment, used it for years before upgrading to one (OK, a couple) of Garmin's "touch screen" models. I believe it has 64mb of internal storage...so you can upload (and change) stored maps. Garmin's City Navigator North American NT has highway/road maps and "Autoroutes" so you can use it in your car/truck, Garmin's TOPO US 2008 is an "OK" topographic map with fairly good detail...down to and including some off road trails. Free Source maps are also available on-line...check out https://www.gpsfiledepot.com/ to see a pretty comprehensive collection. You might also like WikiLoc Trails at Wikiloc - GPS trails and waypoints of the World, they have a large collection of different types of trails (hiking/off & on road cycling/State & National Parks)...you can download them for free and upload them to the 60CSx. If the one you're considering is in good shape, and you can get it for a good price...you won't be disappointed. Added: I erred on the internal storage...the 60CSx has MicroSD capability...so storage for waypoint, routes, tracks, and maps is expandable based upon the size of the MicroSD card. Bill
Thanks for the info, the one I'm looking at seems to be hardly used and I can get it probably for $100 if not a little less. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
For you guys who already use them, with the micro sd slot would you buy a chip from some place like onXmaps for your state then just put it in the unit? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think that's a fair price for one. I have a Colorado 400t and have used it without fail on several boundary waters canoe trips. It was totally invaluable to have the GPS backup to the maps. I never got lost, and for me that's kinda a big deal I went back and forth between the Colorado and the 60Csx. Not sure what pushed me to the Colorado at the time.
I use a garmin etrex I have had for probably better than 10 years. Nothing fancy but always work fine, just needs new batterys every 6 months or so.
This is what i use for a back up, though I have yet to hunt a spot up here or in Colorado that I needed to use it over my phone.
It looks like I could get a new version one of the 64 models for 200-250. Might go that way but I still would need to buy a chip for my state.
Most of the public land spots I hunt I lose signal really quickly so thats why I want to go to dedicated unit to map stuff out.
I grabbed a Rino 120 off ebay recently. Really pleased thus far. Trying to use cell phone gps in CO last year did not go well
The 60'csx is a great unit. Awesome battery life and Bullet proof. Not sure if you can get the topo/aerial view on it like the 64 models have now, which is very cool for hunting. I only use mine for atv trips and have no complaints.
I think I can put in a Micro SD card with the top/aerial maps on it for this device. But I'm not totally sure.
It does take a card with maps. Maybe it's the Birdseye view I'm thinking of? It's pretty awesome but it looks like it's by subscription though. BirdsEye Satellite Imagery | Garmin
Awesome thanks. Im going to get my hands on it and see how it is in person. I might spend a little more and get a newer refurb model.
