So lately I have been thinking about getting another handgun, and I think I want a .45 but I don't know which brand or model  Anyone have any recommendations? I would like to stay at or under $500 if possible.

I will be using it mostly for carrying in the field while shed hunting, scouting, etc. Right now I only have a .44 mag, and that's a tad too big and bulky for walking a long ways through thick brush and whatnot.

    Thanks in advance!

This is my .45. If you're worried about size, though.....this might not be your gun....lol.

XD is great. It's a little over your price range, at least in my neck of the woods. Why a 45? I carry a Glock 19... compact 9mm. It's my off-duty weapon of choice. You might be able to find what your looking for by asking a local gun store about police trades.

Jeff, I'm not really worried about size, I just think carrying my .44 mag revolver with a 6" barrel is a little overkill haha. What model is that gun anyways?

Josh, I just like the idea of a .45 I guess, kind of like why you see all these trucks with a 12" lift and 40" tires :poke: And I like to know that if I NEEDED to kill something, that I have more than enough gun to do it (another reason I like the .44 lol)

I'm not a handgun guru by any means, so I don't really know that much about the different models and brand reputations. I figured there is more knowledge here than what I could piece together on the web.

It's a Springfield Armory 1911-A1. Suits my needs, just fine. I always wanted a 1911 style handgun. But, they're not for everyone.

    Good luck.

That's what I was thinking, I like that style, and the Glocks too. I think my biggest challenge will be finding one I like, while staying within a reasonable budget...

My next handgun purchase will be a .40 Glock. I've been wanting one for a while, but keep spending all my money on archery stuff.

Get the Judge. Not that much smaller I guess, but hey you can shoot .410 shells if you'd like. Both my brother & brother-in-law have one. My BIL was up last weekend and killed a grouse with it :tu: It was the Judge's first shot fired :D

Scaling back to a .40 would save you some coin on your pistol purchase as well as money every time you pick up ammo for it.

Sprinfield Armory XD is close to your budget. The XDM cost a little bit more than the XD. Both great pistols though.

    I absolutely LOVE my 1911.
Springfield Loaded model, it instantly became my favorite.

i can honestly say after quite a few years of tactical target shooting, i strongly dislike glocks.
1911's are one of those guns that almost anyone shoots well as soon as you set it in their hands. really a fantastic design.
that actually might be my partial love of the xd line, same grip angle as a 1911. and my hatred for glocks, becuase they have a 5 degree negative cant.
huge sig fan as well, but thats a bit pricy. you can get an entry level 1911 which should be right up your ally for right in your price range.

I have always liked the looks of the 1911 style. Also, I have rather big hands, so a smaller framed gun wouldn't be as comfortable I don't think. I will probably look into finding a 1911 somewhere in the near future, hopefully I find a good deal on one

See I think thats how mine would be too, I have some big ol paws for some reason. I actually had to get an oversized grip for my .44
