What is your choice for home defense and for those that have a CCW Permit is it the same choice or something different?
Here are a few of my Home defense weapons. Kel Tec Sub 2000 in 9MM with 3/30 round Glock clips. Colt Anaconda in .44 Mag Ruger P-90, cheap but accurate piece of junk with 4/7 round clips and custom Hogue grip Walter PPK, cute little .380 for Momma to use in emergencies.
Home defense is a CZ P-01... best pistol I've ever shot. Most critics rank it in the top three nines in history, and I concur. My carry piece is a Bersa 380 CC... and I'm probably about to pick up a Ruger LCP to give me a bit of versatility when I'm wearing my shirt tucked in.
Nothing says home protection like the pumping of a shotgun. It's a very recognizable sound and will send even the bravest intruder fleeing. If my shotgun is not in reach, the .357 and Glock very well are!
X2 w/ "short" barrel and various loads of ammo and different handguns in various locations throughout:d
Right now home defense is a 95lb Rottweiler that needs a bit more mental maturity but he's workable now, at 16 months. I Should be getting another pup in a couple of months but it will be at least a couple of years before we are back to the good ol' 1, 2 "punch".
That will be a great front line defense!! Back a few years ago I had a female doberman (approx.70#) and a male rottweiler (165-170#). She had the speed and tenacity but he brought the power:d (she was the boss though)
I knew the shotgun would show up on several replies for home defense, and for good reason. I've got one handy as well in addition to my other handguns. I watched an interesting episode on a gun show last week (can't recall what the name was, I was just flipping channels) and they had a compelling reason to use bird shot as your propellant out of a shotgun for home defense. The guys set up about six walls of sheetrock, and shot various loads through them -- showing that if you missed your target, any stray bullet needs to be accounted for direction-wise especially if other family members were in other parts of your house. The bird shot, they showed, would probably deter or stop most intruders if hit in the chest at seven yards or so, but wouldn't keep driving through the house into other rooms. Food for thought for those that didn't catch the show.
When I still lived in PA, I had a matching pair of Glock 23's. I knew before moving to NY that it would be next to impossible to get a permit, so I sold them. They are so liberal here, it's pretty difficult, but I'm going to apply this year in NY and hope to get lucky and get my CCW again. Not sure what I'll buy next time around, but I really liked my Glocks. I will likely get another pair of those, but this time maybe in .45 and one in 9mm. Not sure which models yet. For now, I have my AR-15 and my Mossberg within reach of the bed. The shotgun is loaded up with 3" #5 turkey loads with a modified choke. The AR has 10 rounds of Hornady TAP sitting on top of 20 more 55gr Federal Tactical XM193 FMJ's. Below is a quick pic of the AR in it's final state. I know a few of you have seen pics of the progress I've made building this one, so I figured I'd update w/ a finished pic.
Home defense: Taurus Tracker 44 Mag. (see avatar) My carry-piece is a Walther P99 subcompact . . .I love that friggin' gun
I'm with Bruce. 65# of canine are wandering our place. He doesn't like anyone coming in here. The only problem is. He makes alot of noise, and runs to hide behind me?1?! Jerk.
I've got two mags for mine = 40 rds of pain for an intruder... this pic isn't mine but it is identical
Two very common mistakes are to buy a pistol for home defense and to think that a pistol has to be a compact or sub-compact to effectively carry. Best true home defense weapon is a shotgun (best 2 are the 870 HD with an added collapsible stock and the Mossberg 590 again add a collapsible stock). The collapsible stock is very good for clearing rooms b/c as you are pie-ing off a room you don't want the barrel to protrude to anywhere that you cannot see. The shorter the weapon, the easier that is to accomplish. The idea is that when they see something, it is the end of the barrel with your eye in-line with it (i.e. ready to shoot them). As far as carry pistols go I have 2 that I switch back and forth on a lot. 1 is a Sig P239. The other is a full size 1911 (single stack). The size of the pistol doesn't really matter all that much so long as you have a good holster that places it correctly. The thickness of the pistol is the only real dimension that is of any real importance in my experience.
i agree that a short barrel shotgun is best for home defense, but that isn't what the OP (original post) asked... imho, 12g 00 Buckshot is tops and the 2 mdls mentioned above are about the best on the market for that purpose...
I used to think that way as well Jim_IV... til I did some research on it... 00 Buck for my 12g now...
If I was a character in a western they'd call me "Scattergun". Nothing says home defense quite like a 12 gauge.
