Not much of a story. We've had pictures of this guy on our trail cameras for a while. I was actually supposed to be in my chemistry class when i shot him, but I go to Rutgers, and because of the hurricane, classes all week were cancelled. We have had basically no activity all last weekend before the hurricane hit, but since the hurricane subsided, deer have been moving like crazy. Around 4:30 I had a nice 8 pointer come in and stand broadside at what would have been a 30 yard clearing, but a tree fell right in my shooting lane and was blocking any possible shot. Then a few minutes later, he winded me and got out of there. About an hour later this guy came out about 150 yards out in a soy bean field that my stand is near. He ended up walking all the way across the field to me, and came in the woods right behind me to a 35 yard opening, I stopped him and took the shot. I didn't see it at the time, but there was a small tree branch about 25 yards out. My arrow hit the branch and went high and I ended up spine shooting him (that sucked). When he went down, he went behind a tree so I couldn't get a follow up shot right away, but I did as fast as I could. I still feel terrible about that. This is the first buck I shot with a bow, and my first wall mounter. 10 pointer with a 19 inch spread. Minus the spine shot, I'm still really excited.
I have never shot a deer in the spine, and I hope I never do. I would probably feel the same way you do. Stuff happens though and at least you had the respect for the animal to put him down as fast as you could. Great deer man!
Excellent buck, nice story and props for follow up as quick as possible. Spined a doe in 2010 year and before I could get down to her had a gorgeous thick 8 pointer come in and paw at her for like 20 minutes before exiting (did put my dad on that buck that night then and he's on his wall ).
Frankenspine. You're welcome...and awesome job! You can tell he was really rubbing with the polished G2s and G3s.
Thats a really good buck! Even though my school got cancelled this whole week im stuck in NYC studying for tests until noon Saturday.
