Was bound to happen, it’s our only feeder that isn’t hanging so it was expected sometime soon. Especially with the amount of bears we see on our property. All we found was the metal legs and the lid. Actions shots of the theft:
Would love to. But unfortunately it would have to be “self defense” We have identified we have about 4 who visit us regularly. We’re going this week to replace it with a hanging feeder so shouldn’t be an issue again.
Apparently last year they were directed to open the season again within two years. That’s what I read on the FWC site.
Hope they don't wait too long. Sucks about the feeder man. They have exploded in population in western NC. And that's with a season for them. Sent from my SM-G935V using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
Your bears look kind of funny down there with hardly any fur. Makes them look a bit small. Up here in Wisconsin they have thick fur that can actually make them look bigger than they are. I have had to chase them off of my bird feeders a couple times. They sit on the ground and bend the poles down to them and shake the seed into their mouths. Couple warning shots with my .45 seems to work. Never knew they could run so fast!
Bears around here will simply destroy any type of feeder you put out. A friend had one out in northern MN for a week and all 4 legs ended up getting bent and the top ripped off. Not fun to deal with that's for sure!
Yeah we kind of expected it would get destroyed but by hogs not bears. We weren’t anticipating the amount of them we would have here but the property hasn’t been hunted in a very long time and even when it was it was just one feeder rarely visited. Its also right in the middle of Indian reservation and state lands so it’s no wonder the population has exploded.
What's your plan moving forward? You have to be going through a lot of feed/corn with hogs and bears hitting the feeder every day.
We still have deer feeding but certainly the hogs are taking the majority share of the corn. We don’t mind the hogs as they are an accepted nuisance that will never be rid of, and they are fun to hunt and always plenty of people want the meat. Not really much we can do about the bears, can’t kill them unless one attacks me and in that case it’ll get a .500 s&w to it’s chest in “self defense”
We have the same problem in South Florida. They don’t seem to “hibernate “ down here in winter months. They rampage and eat. I had to raise my feeders 6 inches because they started getting to them @ 8 feet to the bottom. This guy was wrecking havoc for awhile a few years back. What a menace he was. A bear once ripped the cap off my uncle's cabin's septic tank. Ripped the lattice off the underside of the back porch, ransacked the gas cans and lawnmower, and broke a window on the front of the cabin itself. We thought it was kids initially but there was scat and foot prints.
I had two feeders that were mangled, now know I know why. Sent from my iPad using Bowhunting.com Forums
