Been hunting on my grandparents land for twenty years. They are both deceased now and my uncle who is a lawyer is in charge and has all the assets in an LLC and is looking to lease out of the land to hunters. Three of the four kids of my grandparents with the exception of my dad moved away from the family grounds many years ago. When my dad, aunt, and two uncles pass on, only my brother and I will have any attachment to the land. That is if there is any land left in our family's name when that day comes. My uncle made a comment to my mom about how I probably wouldn't want to pay $10,000 dollars to lease the land. Here's the thing, this is over 400 acres of prime hunting land in Ohio. So either, my uncle is an idiot and doesn't know what he's doing, or he is lying about how much the lease is for and is pocketing the rest of the money. It's not finalized yet so maybe things will change and I will still get the privilege to hunt on the land again but it's out of my hands. Have to give it up to the Lord and try not to worry about it. In other news, my wife and I have been living in central Wisconsin the last three years and I just got in and found a decent hunting spot and now we are planning on moving to southeast Kansas to a town called Coffeyville. If anyone knows of any hunting spots in the area please let me know. I have seed for food plots, I am a hard worker and would be willing to help out cutting wood or some other work project if needed to earn my right to hunt.
Similar situation... it's a hard thing to bear when things like this happen. I hope it will all work out for you. "Family" is a royal pain in the behind at times--and money (greed for it) changes things.
Yes it is heartbreaking. I've already dealt with it before. My Grandpa and great uncle owned the surrounding 600-700 acres behind my house. It has been in the family since my ancestors came over from Ireland after the potato famine to work on the railroad in Ohio. My great uncle gave his part of the land to one of his adopted sons, who then turned around and sold it. So one day about half that land that I used to hike on and have adventures on with my German Shepherd dog as a young boy was now off limits. It's a hard pill to swallow and I didn't understand it as a kid and now that I do understand it, it doesn't make me feel any better!
Just curious but how much would that 400 acres lease for do you think? Good luck on your search for new land.
Honestly, I do not know. I figure something like that would go for $40,000-$50,000 but that's just my guess. I have no control over it so you're asking the wrong guy.
Do all the members of the family have to agree on leasing or does your uncle have all the say. My family has about 350 acres and it's set up so that all the family has to agree on anything being done.
Jeeez thats a lot if that's correct. I'm so glad that where I hunt you can still get access by knocking on doors, but i'm sure that'll change in the coming years as leasing becomes more popular everywhere.
I had to watch one of my uncles destroy my grandfather's farm as well. but 2 yrs ago karma got him when an unusual PA tornado ripped right through the heart of the property. I guess my grandfather is looking down not approving of the turn out of his property. at least it is how I'm reasoning it out in my mind. my point is what goes around comes around. it will all work out for you in the end. hang tough!!!
Joe, My condolences. Sometimes things have a way of working out. Either way good luck and keep us updated on how things go for you.
Thanks to all you guys, I appreciate all my fellow hunting brethren! My uncle is power of attorney so he gets the say. We had some old set aside fields CRP and my uncle wanted to cancel it and have it planted with pine trees a few years ago and my family talked him out of it thankfully. Yeah he told my mom that he would work it out where I could still hunt but I don't want any part of that. But hopefully it works out and if we can sell our house up in Wisconsin maybe i'll be able to buy my own hunting ground in Kansas!
