They have been "talking about" that for years, i'll believe it when I see it. But, it sure would be nice!
I really hope so, I just paid 110 bucks for my hunting/fishing liscence, and only get 30 days of bow only. That sucks. Where did you hear about it from?
By Steve Piatt Editor Thursday, June 11, 2009 9:55 AM CDT Albany - A series of public meetings are being planned this fall by DEC to discuss potential changes to the state's deer management program and gauge hunter sentiment on a variety of options. DEC wildlife biologist Jeremy Hurst said it's way to early to speculate as to what those changes may be. “Our deer team hasn't even sat down at this point to put together their thoughts,” Hurst said. “But we're going to have meetings this fall - probably two per region, similar to back in 2000 when we did our State of the Deer Herd meetings. We'll discuss where we stand, the challenges, and current hot-button issues within the hunting community.” Although Hurst said “there really isn't a time line for change,” indications are that any changes in deer management or regulations could come as early as the 2010 season. Among the items that could be proposed are an earlier opener to the archery season, as well as an early muzzleloader season. The earlier kickoff to the Southern Zone archery season - New York Bowhunters is pushing for an Oct. 1 start - has been swirling among sportsmen already. And the early muzzleloader proposal may be similar to one that was widely opposed by hunters late in 2004 and ultimately scrapped. But Hurst says DEC is looking at ways to achieve the desired antlerless deer harvest without doling out so many deer management permits to allow for low success rates in many wildlife management units. “DMPs are our primary management tool in the Southern Zone, but success rates on DMPs run about 18-20 percent, and in some cases less than 10 percent,” he said. “So we have to issue a lot of permits. We'll talk about different options that will let us get the antlerless harvest that we need. There can be different ways of doing that, including altering opportunities for antlerless seasons.” Hurst confirmed that an Oct. 1 archery opener in the Southern Zone “may be on the table,” as well as an early muzzleloader season. “That would also enhance the harvest,” he said. The statewide bowhunters' organization has also called for a Sept. 1 archery opener in the Northern Zone; it typically opens in late September for holders of leftover tags from the previous license year, then Oct. 1 for other hunters. But Hurst said a Sept. 1 start up north wouldn't necessarily be tied to an Oct. 1 opener down south. One regulation that's not likely to change is the Saturday start to the Southern Zone firearms deer season. Moved from a Monday several years ago, DEC officials say the Saturday opener has generally become accepted by hunters. “There has been some feedback (on the Saturday opener) but it hasn't been so consistent. There's not a concerted push to have that changed,” Hurst said. Other management options likely to arise include: implementing an “Earn-a-Buck” program whereby hunters would have to harvest an antlerless deer before taking a buck. He says that “has been proposed by various groups of hunters,” but the state of Wisconsin recently scrapped its program amid hunter opposition after several years. a “one buck” regulation that would limit hunters to taking one buck per season. Currently, they are allowed to take bucks by bow, muzzleloader and rifle or shotgun. Hurst, however, says hunter sentiment is split on that issue as well. “It's frequently suggested by some hunters, but we also know many hunters prefer to keep the buck bag limit the same as it is now,” he said. Meetings will likely take place in September and October, and Hurst stressed that no proposals have been generated to change existing deer-hunting regulations or the season structure. “We're simply evaluating our current tag and season structure to identify areas for enhanced management capability and flexibility,” he said. “The best scenario would be to utilize our current regulations without much modification. We already have a good sense of the current issues (among hunters); we've received feedback on our deer management program daily for about the last decade. There are a lot of potential options.”
Im always the pessamist, there are a lot of proposals, but they all seem to dissolve and most people forget about them. I really hope to see it happen, but lets be honest, this is NY and nothing get done here. October 17th is really a tough time to open the bow season (from a hunting perspective). I know my success rate would certainly sky rocket with the ability to (somewhat) take advange of the summer patters that I get to know so well. Its pretty tough having the opener take place in the "dead time" between the summer feeding and november chasing. I wouldn't even have a problem reducing the number of tags I get just for more hunting time, I would take that trade all day long.
Well this is going to be the toughest season for me by far, but im still hoping to be successful in the late season.
I am calling it...I have scouted some huge deer this year and I doubt i am gonna kill em!! heheh one can pray though right?
