    Hello,

I am still new to elk hunting and need a little advice. Being a beginner would it be better to process the elk using the gutless method or should I gut it. I have heard a lot of different opinions about which is better but I am trying to figure out which is better to start with. Does anyone have some advice for me?

    It would be much appreciated.

If your packing it out then there is absolutely no reason to gut it.

I have done both. On an animal that big I would rather avoid gutting. However, it is partially dependent on a few factors; shot placement and recovery time being the most important. An animal that is shot in the vitals and recovered quickly is a different situation than one that is gut shot and left overnight.

    It depends.

If I'm leaving it overnight..... I gut it.
If I'm packing it out immediately, I break it down without gutting it.

Check local laws too. Some stipulate what you can and can't leave. Personally I like to get the meat cooled down as quickly as possible. Like Elkguide said if you are going to break it down immediately no need to gut unless regulations dictate otherwise. Meaning if you are packing it out and have to make a few trips you break it down and hang the meat so air can circulate around it, then pack it out as you can.

Good luck and I hope you have this problem soon.
