when I was south on t-day i once again got familiar with the m16/ar15 that my uncle had... its been a while since I shot one, but now have the itch to get one... its primary duty will be as a coyote/bobcat gun and secondary purpose is for fun and zombie killin' :D i've been readin up a little but wanna see what kinda advice you guys can offer up... I'd kinda like to get a flat top upper with a heavy barrel that is floated so I can install optics and possibly bipod legs, and the adjustable stock... I'm gonna forgo the iron sights i think for this particular one given its intended purpose... I'm torn about what barrel length to go with or what brands to go with, right now i'm kinda leaning toward poppin the big bucks for the Colt or saving a few and opting for the CMMG since it'll be modified anyway... what's the BH.com braintrust got for me...
i shoot M4 version's of a DPMS which is on the cheaper side, deff Colt if you have the $$$$ is the way to go. i have one stock (iron sites) and another all tricked out! really up to you. its like barbie doll for a guy, sooooooo many accessories. i like the M4 cause its shorter stock is adjustable. the stock one is just for zombie killing! the other i like to play sniper and see how far away i can hit a pie plate. ammo is coming back down a bit, but still kinda high. if you take it to a range and see others with a .223 sit next to the guy with the nicest gun bag.... he prob doesnt collect his brass, a good way to pick some xtra up. got a guy in Huntley who had done me right and about 15 other guys i sent to him..... called "Rguns" ask for Roger he'll tighten you up! well here is my best beetle bailey face!!!
Isiah....that picture just scared the hell outta me bro! :D I better see you at one of the shows this winter!
dan i'll see you for sure! many appologies for not taking one of my deer pics in a RJ hat, will do the next one i shoot!!!!!!!!!
My advice is to pick yourself up a stripped lower of your choice locally. Once you have that, then you can buy the rest of the parts online and have them shipped directly to yourself. If your setting up a calling gun, I'd be looking for something MUCH lighter that isn't going to have a heavy bull barrel. AR's get heavy very quickly, especially when wearing optics. After picking up your stripped lower, and the necessary parts to complete the lower (takes 1/2 an hour to build the lower, VERY easy to do), I'd be picking up a Rock River Coyote Carbine. It's a VERY light setup, very compact, and still carries a 3/4 MOA guarantee. These guns are compact, but boy do they shoot! I'm seriously considering trading my current upper for one, NYS is an assault weapons ban state though so I'll have to have someone pull the flash hider and chop the barrel to get rid of the threads, or permanently pin a compensator in place of the flash hider. I'd be looking at www.pkfirearms.com for picking up your parts. They are in IL, so shipping will be really fast, and if it's on their site that means it's in stock. There are a LOT of sites out there that advertise stuff, you order, and then find they are back ordered 6-12 months out. A parts list of stuff for you to look at if I were building one from scratch for your intended purpose (assuming you have the stripped lower)..........all of these are available and instock at www.pkfirearms.com as of today. Ace Skeleton Stock Ergo Suregrip Pistol Grip Accuwedge Rock River Arms Match 2-Stage Lower Receiver Parts Kits (includes a really nice trigger for cheap) Solid Timney Trigger .154 - 3 Pound Pull (only if you buy the regular parts kit w/o the match trigger and want to upgrade a top end trigger) Rock River Arms Winter Trigger Guard (great for when you have gloves on) Rock River Arms Coyote Carbine Upper (comes w/ the rubber coated Hogue floating hand guard) In addition to all this I'd hop on midwayusa.com and pick up the Burris P.E.P.R scope mount, I've had 2x of these and they really work fantastic, plus you have the picatinny tops on the rings so you can mount a flashlight, or low profile red dot sight for close quarters. Edit - Your gun should look the bottom one when it's done, except yours will have a mount and glass on top
Isaiah is 100% right, these things are tough to stop messing with once you get one. :D I'm already thinking about selling my upper and buying another. I'd like to get a lighter 16" barrel for a calling gun, and I'd also like to have Mike at D-Tech build me a custom .25 WSSM upper for longer range shooting and deer hunting. Here is an older pic of mine, several things have changed since this pic. I'll list the stuff I've got now below....... Doublestar stripped lower DPMS lower parts kit Timney 3lb solid drop in trigger ACE Skeleton Stock ERGO pistol grip Rock River Arms bolt and carrier assembly Badger Ordnance tactical latch and charging handle Rock River Arms winter trigger guard Rock River Arms fluted/knurled floating hand guard (tapped for sling/bipod) www.pkfirearms picatinny top gas block Bushmaster upper reciever Bushmaster 20" v-match barrel (1 in 9 twist) Burris P.E.P.R 30mm scope mount Leupold VX3 Target 4.5-14x40 - 30mm tube I'm shooting 55gr V-Max's out of it over 23.5 grains of benchmark.........and it'll shoot half decent when I do my part. :D (There's 5 of them in there, from 100 yards. The odd one was because of me......)
I've considered building one of these as a varmint/range gun. I've never really broke it down into a detailed parts list, but roughly (if one of you owners don't mind) how much does it cost to build one that would be considered mid-range?
very nice RJ, that's pretty close to what i'm lookin for... i'd like to find an 18" barrel if possible but the overall effect is about what those coyote rifles are... I'd like a collapsible stock also for tight shooting situations...
build one! its how I got started, get a stripped lower and an upper from Delton or Rock River... Have built three to date - can do it with pretty basic hand tools - I purchased some roll pin punches and a few other odds and ends, but could have done it with what I had already slippery slope... I have an M4, a A2 and a pistol with a RRA 7.5" barrel - wicked little bastard
ya, FM, I know... spent plenty of time with the m16 when i served, but was mostly a 60 gunner, so it was kinda refreshing to fire the old girl again a couple weeks back...
i was lookin at the Rock River site and they have a stainless Varmint version that is almost identical to what im lookin for... any word on the RRA quality standards???
I know several guys with RR AR-15s and they love them. One of my buddies is on a swat team in MO and he carries a RR. If I had the $ to spend on another toy thats the brand I would go with.
RRA is as good as it gets in a mass produced gun. Their accuracy on the predator models is guaranteed @ 3/4 MOA or better. The quality on their guns is nothing short of fantastic. I have a LOT of RRA parts in my gun. To get anything better quality, your going to have to pay and wait for a custom gun like what you would get through someone like Mike @ D-Tech, plan on 6-12 months. You won't really get higher quality through a custom, but will be able to get exact options you may want without having to mess with anything. With that said, the predator and varmint models RRA makes are really nice, but they really get heavy in a carrying rifle. You aren't going to get any additional accuracy over a 16" coyote carbine either. Even a 16" Varmint model from RRA with glass and mounts on it is going to weigh in @ roughly 10lbs loaded.
Also, make sure you look at the Remington R-15's. They are really light weight and are based on a Bushmaster barrel. As you can see from my target, the Bushmaster barrels can and will shoot VERY well. Also, if your looking for a RRA, check out gunbroker.com. If you order direct from RRA, you are in for a wait. You might be able to find what you want on gunbroker.com and have it shipped to your local FFL holder. Most FFL's will do the transfer for roughly $30.
nice RJ... i'll give it a look... i'm about 3-6 months out... but i'm anxoius if the right deal comes along... :D
My buddy just got a Rock River AR-15 in .223. We haven't really played with it too much. If it were me, and I had the money, I would go for an AR-10. I'd just was a bigger caliber, for longer ranges and to have the option to deer hunt with it. The .223 is legal here to deer hunt with, but I'm not going to!
I recently got a Rock River lower with a YHM flat top upper. Not sure bout the brand of barrel but it is a med. contour straight 16" tube with a comp. First 3 shot group went in to 3/4" DO NOT fire this thing without hearing protection! I'm really wanting a PSE crossbow upper for this thing. Have a friend that got one with a DPMS lower and it shoots 4" groups at 100 yds. Haven't heard the numbers on the energy for that far though.
