I'm going out tomorrow for an all day hunt. I'm hunting an open grass field in the middle of the woods with a Creek running on the edge of thee field. I plan on going out tonight and buying a grunt call or a grunt roar call. What would be the best way to use these tomorrow?
Best advice right now... Don't use one. During the rut grunt calls can work like magic, but during the early season you can't expect to blow into a grunt tube and have deer come running... Just my experience. Find one with multiple calls built in. You don't need to buy the biggest and baddest one either. Most any grunt call these days will work just fine. In late October when you decide to use the grunt call, I'd recommend the primos hardwood grunter. It'll do anything from a fawn bleat to a mature buck grunt. I've used a few different calls in the past and the hardwood grunter definitely gets the best responses on my hunting property
I killed a huge 8pt in Nebraska 20 years ago in September by grunting him in from the middle of a hay field on an evening hunt. I used low, social grunts to get his attention. When he did not come, I figured I had nothing to lose so I threw the book at him. Every time he would look away, I would grunt. Finally, a series of tending grunts brought him in to 20 yards and end of story. That is not the only buck I have killed by using the grunt call prior to pre-rut. The response was purely curiosity driven, but it worked. That all day sit this early is the only thing I would seriously question. That is a little optimistic. lol
I scared off a decent buck with some rattling the other day, I only noticed him as he slipped away. I grunted at him a few times after he dissappeared, but never saw him again. About that time a doe and fawn ran right in to within shooting range, I'm not sure if they came to the grunt or were just already heading there, but they were totally at ease. That doe is now in the freezer! I usually wouldn't have been calling so early in the season, but I've read a few books (strategies for whitetails) and articles lately encouraging it.
