Killed many ground hogs with my ruger 10/22 growing up. And you can't beat the price on ammo. With that being said my next gun is probably gonna be a Henry Golden Boy in 22 mag. Really really want one of those. So of your going to use it strictly for hunting ground hogs 22 mag is very hard to beat.
Hell no on a Savage. Or at least check it out thoroughly. Trigger pull on a savage 22 is not adjustable and is terrible. Pulling the trigger takes you off target. Remington If you go 22, it's head shots only. Shot them all my life as a kid with a Remighton 22. Sneaked, crawled, waited for them to pop up etc. A sharp whistle gets them to stand up... POP. One in the brain and they're done.... 50 yards and under is more realistic. 22 Mag... a little more range and not as fun to just plink with.
If you go savage make sure it has the accu-tigger! That thing is sweet Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah mine has the accu trigger. I like it a lot. Never had an issue hitting my target with it other then when its windy...then you are screwed with the .17 lol. I love .22lr, but I have such little use for it. Thats why I say the mag. heck you can even take coyotes under 50 yards with head shots with it. .22 mag cost a bit more to shoot but you get a bit more out of it. Even tree rats with good head shots are just fine.
go with .223. the ammo is certainly cheap enough... less than .50/rd and you can buy bulk for really cheap. its a much more versatile gun in my opinion.
hell an inexpensive 22lr will work just fine, but if you are worried its to light get a barret 50 bmg you wont even have to worry about disposing of the carcasses
