I was looking at getting a .22 to take care of groundhogs. Still have 400 dollars from Christmas and my job. Any suggestions? Don't know much about purchasing .22's. should I put a scope on it or just a red dot?

Put a scope. And If you can, I would look for a .22 mag. Not sure how far your shots will be, and the mag is more expensive to shoot. But, the .22 long rifle is a bit light for groundhogs unless it is close shots.

Yup... try to upgrade to something that'll reach out there a little further than a 22.

If you happen to be in the Northeast PA area I have a nice .17hmr with a good scope for $400 lol. That would be great on hogs out to 200 yards.

Well we live in nj so anything above a .25 caliber is not allowed. What about a .243? Also my shots will be between 50 and 100 yards from my back porch.

I was going to say pick up a used 223 somewhere. If you happen across a coyote it'll take care of them too.

That is good too. But I'm looking for something small and light that I can carry in the woods for fun but the ammo is also inexpensive

Yeah .223 wouldnt be bad. Hard to find them in the $400 range but there out there. If groundhog is really the only thing you need it for, .22 mag or .17 hmr. Ammo is easy to get, they are fun to shoot, and both are great 100 yard guns. But if you think you will coyote hunt or anything else, might want to look bigger. .243 is a good option. Shouldnt be to hard to find one in that price range used. Would be useful if you ever wanna deer hunt with it also. Its a big over kill for groundhogs, but you arnt planning on eating em Im sure who it doesnt matter. .222 is also good, harder to find ammo for though. I love good rimfire guns, so again if its just for the hogs .22 mag or .17 hmr. And they are easy to find at good prices. Only selling mine because I want a .17 or .22 mag in semi auto instead of bolt.

I think I won't deer hunt with it cause I have my 7mm for when I hunt in NY and PA. How much is 17 hmr cause 22 is real inexpensive

Ammo wise? $13-15 for a box of 50. def not as cheap as .22lr, nothing really is, but its not the worse. .223 and .243 are gonna cost a lot more.

Around the same price. Not postive exactly, I dont own one right now so its been a while since I bought .22 mag ammo. But I know they always were close to the same. If its between the 2 guns it really comes to what one you would rather have. The .22 mag is better out to 100 yards. past that, the .17 hmr takes the lead. I wouldnt shoot a .22mag much past like 150 yards when the .17 is good to around 250...if theres no wind lol. .22 mag is slower but a heavier bullet so hits a bit harder at the closer range but loses to much speed past 100 where the .17 still holds its speed good there. But, because the .17 is lighter, the wind effects it more. So, they both have ups and downs lol. For your range, I would go for the .22 mag, but if you find a good .17 in your price range I wouldnt count it out.

.17 or .22-250 love both of them. Summer days on top a hill glassing with the 250 is a blast

Definitely a .17 over a .22. The ammo is a little more expensive, but they put them down so much better. Way more range too. My brother bought a savage .17, I forget the exact amount he paid, but i was under $400 scope and all.

forgot to add, .22lr are great fun and cheap to shoot for sure. And with practice you can shoot out to 75-100 yards. But, if I was you, I wouldnt want it for groundhogs. I wouldnt hunt much bigger then a squirrel with one really. With a good shot, sure it'll do the job. but to be fair to the animal, even an annoying woodchuck, I would go a bit bigger for the 50+ yard shots.

I think I'll go 22 mag. 100 yards from my deck the field stops so shots are 100 yards or less.

Good choice. Look into Savage, I know they have a couple models, that come with a scope, in your price range. Make sure you post up a picture when you get one.
