Because my interest in bow hunting spiked in the last few days I have been watching lots of the Sportsman Channel. I see commercials for tree stands and ground blinds. Is one of these more preferable to the other? I imagine there are good and bad about each. As a fairly heavy guy (300 lbs) and one who isn't thrilled about heights I think I'd be more inclined to use a ground blind. Should I just suck it up when the time comes and get up in a tree?
Honestly i love being up in the tree def. durning bow season because well i just hate snakes haha. But there is surely something special about being on the ground face to face with deer. I have some box stands on the ground and love seeing deer get right up on you at like 5 yards its awesome. So hunt whatever way you feel safe for one. But just being out there is all that matters.
If you're not comfortable being 15' or so up in the air and standing on a platform 2' x 2' at best, don't do it. Your confidence and shooting ability could suffer considerably when it's crunch time. I think both have their place. The plus side to ground blinds is they can't smell you like they can up in a tree. I use both depending on the circumstances.
I've had quite a bit of success both ways (and failures too). There's no reason to say one is necessarily better or worse than the other. Personally I will jump hurdles to take a tree (or en elevated platform blind) over a ground blind but that's personal preference. I like being up in the air and having an elevated view. Maybe it's the Cherokee in me but I could care less about heights, I'll climb and sit in about anything to get off the ground.
Do you hunt on private or public land? I like a climber myself, you would require a summit Goliath at 300. Which is a awesome climber. You might like a ladder stand, I have never hunted out of one but going to invest in a 2 man stand for me and my grandson. Good luck Hey seen me some CDB a many times growing up in the 70's and 80's
