Just gonna try to film some this year, I have a Canon camera (Canon VIXIA HF R500 Full HD Camcorder), nothing fancy, but will get the job done I think.... Question, Im thinking about getting the low end Muddy camera arm to use with it, but if your filming by yourself, where is the idea location to place the arm...Above you, beside you, level with you, etc...you get what Im saying... I Just would like to know where to place it so that I can operate it myself.... Thanks for the info or help Creeks!
On your right side, just above waist level so that you can swing it in front of your body while still in a seated position. You can also reach this location while standing up. Try and get the base pointing as forward as possible in the direction the are will most likely be when filming, as opposed to putting the base 90 degrees from there. That helps with the stability in the arm and keeps some of the bounce out of it. It goes on the right side generally because that's the side where the LCD screen is usually easiest to see. It also allows a right handed shooter to hold their bow and operate the camera with their left hand.
I like to have it set so that my camera is eye level (or slightly higher) when seated. A great way to ruin any in-tree interviews is to be completely silhouetted by the sky behind you, which is what happens if the camera is low and points up at your face. If you like your arm lower, an alternative is to crouch down on your platform to get lower and be eye level with the camera. Of course that will usually mean having to adjust your safety harness to get that low.
Make sure you practice everything before opening day. Do a mock hunt in a tree with a target to shoot at, and treat it like the real thing. Have fun! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I practice it regularly. ( this pic was from a few years ago when I first started)I set up the target in a random spot, (on a fake deer run) I then scout for a suitable tree, hang the LW and "hunt" just like the real thing. It really helps. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
