After failing to get a deer during the youth hunts in Oklahoma and Arkansas, my 11 year old granddaughter finally got her first deer. We set up in a blind before daylight Sunday morning. She saw doe at first light followed by a forked horn, but no shot. A little later, a spike passed by, and she could not get steady. About 8:30, a group of 8 does made their way into shooting range. She was trying to shoot one of them, but there were too many eyes looking at us. I was watching the does when she whispers, "Papa, there's a buck." I stopped him with a grunt when I thought she had a shot. He was behind a tree for her. He walked a few more steps, and she said, "Stop him again." A shot rang out from her 6.5 creedmoor. I could tell she hit him well. She was crying/ laughing when she said, "Papa, I think I'm having a seizure." Buck fever had sat in. We waited 30 minutes and began to follow the blood trail. She led the way, although I had to slow her down a couple of times. After following blood about 75 yards, she found him piled up. She's been on cloud 9 ever since. I love it! Great job papa, and congrats to your granddaughter. She'll never forget this memory with papa. The only thing that even comes close to that first deer feeling is being a part of a child or grandchild getting their first.
Congratulations to the young Huntress! Thanks for sharing, but would love to hear the story from her in her own words!?!
