I'm planning on checking out some public land tomorrow and decided I'd take a friend's GPS in order to get exactly where I want to go. The only problem is I can't input the correct "N" coordinate into the GPS. The coordinate is N 36.99782 but I can't get the first "9" (tenth decimal place) to enter in the GPS. It only goes to "5". What am I doing wrong?

Also, if you see any great spots be sure to point them out. The markers are the three places I think would be a good place to look.

You have to go into your GPS settings and change the "map datum" to WGS84. If I remember correctly from my old GPS, that will help you. What type of GPS are you using Finch?

You will also have to change your GPS coordinate system to:

    "DD MM SS"

That should give you want you want.

    Well, I borrowed two. :)

One is a Garmin eTrexLegend and the other is a Magellan SportTrak Pro. I'll try your recommendation. Thanks!

Brett....both GPS's are already set to WGS84. When I go to Coor system, I choose Lat/Long and then the following list comes up. Still can't get it to work.

    DEG/MIN.MM
DEG/MIN.MMM ==== This is current setting
    DEG.DDDDD

    +1....... ROOKIES!!! :D

    Finch,
You can also change ACME to Degrees, Minutes, Seconds, but I like the Degrees.dddd most better personally.

Assuming you're going to be in that same area, these would be my likely spots to look at..... Also, if you can orienteer, you may not really even need that GPS as there is enough topography that you ought to be able to orienteer on that mountain without a GPS fairly well.....

Good Luck out there, looks like a fun place to hunt....:tu:
