I went out and scouted today and plotted some points on my GPS. I came back to the house and tried to bring those points back up on Google and the ACME mapper. Each time I entered the points, it plotted those points to about 30 miles south to 30 miles east. For example if a coordinate I plotted came out to: N 38.37.77, then the map would show that coordinate as 38.53.77 or something close to that...meaning I was off my approximately .15-.20 on my middle gps coordinate. Does anyone know how to go about re-calibrating one's GPS unit? I have a simple GPS, a Magellan explorist 100. Thank you all very much for your help as I have marked over 40 GPS spots in the last 2 years and really would like to keep those points accurate. Brett
I don't know about your GPS but in mine you can set the map datum WGS 84 (World Geodetic System). I needed to to do that to the gps to match my mapping software and I would suspect you would need to set it to that or to whatever google and the acme mapper use. If that is not it you may have to change your position format. Right now I am using hddd mm.mmm' degrees and minutes It looks like you are using hddd mm'ss.s" degrees minutes and seconds I needed to make sure my mapping software and gps were the same and google and acme may not be set to use seconds, just degrees and minutes.
Thank you Bruce. I read a little online prior to posting this and saw something about the WGS but didn't know what it meant. I will look into reseting the map datum to make sure it lines up with Google and ACME. Thanks again.
Bruce, I went onto my GPS and matched my coordinates to degrees and minutes and it mapped out perfectly! A BIG thank you!
You're welcome. Now you will see how much the gps can help mapping out deer movements and patterns. Good luck!
