Anybody have it?? If so, how do you handle it? I think I am going to go into the doctor and get on preventatives because this is absolutely debilitating. I had my first flare up about 2 months ago and just flared up again last night. The worst pain Ive ever been in.

Allopurinol Is likely what they will give you, just watch out for fatigue, and have your red blood cell count checked.
Do you by chance drink "Snapple" or other fruity teas or the likes?

No Snapple or fruity teas. I do like regular unsweetened iced tea though. Ive gone through all the foods that can cause flare ups and reduced them from my diet, but to no avail since I flared up again last night. I figured Allopurinol was what I was going to be given, the first flare he gave me Indocin and Chochyl (that is the WORST drug I have ever taken. I couldnt get more than thirty feet from the bathroom, but that was better than the pain). I would seriously ok a morphine drip right now...

Do others in your family have it, there is a very real genetic link that I find more than a passing coincidence, my mothers family all have it, the alcohol link seems irrelevant as none of them drink, more of it seems to come with changes in diet, like during travel or vacations.

What about seafood? I have heard that causes flareups.

Are you talking from personal experience or what you have been told? As I can find no relationship to red meat, and little to beer unless it is excessive.

Peanuts, snapple and energy drinks with high sugar content, and genetics.

Likely the butter, or the iodine, every thing in moderation.

Yes, my toe looks like yours except mine is the base joint not the second joint. Thank GOD i dont have it anywhere else yet. Although I have had arthritis in the joint at the base of my thumb for three years, making me wonder if it was gout the whole time. Ive only had two attacks, but I cant seem to find any correlation as to any food that has caused it. The Dr. gave me the option after the first one to go on Allopurinal but I decided to wait and see if I was only going to flare up once every year or so. That doesnt seem to be the case.

Thanks for the info John, its nice to hear from someone who has actually gone through this junk. Are you on Allopurinal now? Has it kept the flare ups away? And have you ever taken that Chochyll crap?

A guy from my hunting camp gets it pretty bad, but I've never seen it like that. I don't wish that on anyone.

As I stated it seems to run in family genes, and mostly in joints that have been injured in the past, my mother has taken Allopurinal for years with mixed results, but recent test shown decreased red blood cell count so she no longer takes them, as fatigue is another side effect I would not recommend it. How ever the pain is quite debilitating, look into indomethodin (SP) instead.
As soon as a doctor tells you its beer and red meat go find a smarter doctor, my family has dealt with this for generations, believe me its more than beer & steaks that does this or half of America would be suffering from it..
    Good luck
