Stuff Is getting a little carried away now with the fans. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/sources-selig-could-still-overturn-blown-call
I was stunned when it happened. Not angry, just stunned. Then I felt bad for the pitcher. I've never seen anything like that. It really wasn't close. Joyce said he didn't think the ball was bobbled, just that the runner beat the throw. He made a mistake, it happens. In the end, Detroit won the game and its just sports. I know that sounds crazy to some people. No one feels worse than the umpire, and at least he admitted his mistake. The people starting websites like firejimjoyce.com and harassing his family need to grow up.
Joyce the umpire was on the WRIF this morning, he owned up to it and said he blew it. He gets my respect for that move.
I think every kid (and adults for that matter) could learn from Galarraga's reaction...just smile...this dude understands what life is all about! (props to Joyce as well for wasting no time in saying he blew it and appologizing to Galarraga personally) With as classy as these two have acted I would like to see the perfect game honored by MLB.
Imagine that...Selig screws up again. Baseball is dying in America = Selig is a terrible commissioner (this totally unrelated to the perfect game issue)
What could he really have done (Selig)? Cite a rule where he can change the outcome to a PG. Could the no-hitter have been salvaged? Yeah. But, as soon as the next pitch was thrown, the PG wasn't an option.
You can't change the call. What if the same play happened in the 3rd inning? What would everyone suggest happen then? I heard the ump was voted as the 2nd best ump in MLB. He screwed up!! Bad calls happen in every sport. Pass interference in football is a big one. How many games would turn out different if a penalty was/wasn't called?
I was thinking about that today. I don't think the reaction would have nearly the same affect as it does the other way around.
Honestly, as this thing moves on, BOTH men have handled themselves in manners that they can be proud of. It's nice to see for a change. I hope that becomes the story, not the possible reversal and the like. Baseball needs people like these men.
