The guy had a perfect game going with 2 outs In the 9th. The next batter hit a grounder to the 1st baseman and the pitcher covered 1st on the throw over. The batter seemed to be clearly out but the umpire called him safe. There goes the perfect game. I feel for the umpire too. He's never going to hear the end of this one.
Yea, that was crazy to watch.... it was an unexcusable mistake on the umpires part. It wasn't a close call, but even if it was... you should give the benefit of the doubt to the pitcher.
I respectively disagree. The batters either out or safe. No benefits should be given regardless of the circumstances If you ask me. This same umpire a few minutes ago just made a statement saying "I just cost the kid a perfect game". Man do I feel for this umpire.
I don't. His job is based on high pressure, split second calls. He knew that going in. Maybe its time to put some of these geezers out to pasture, or get instant replay for circumstances like this.
If this ump made this call based on what he saw and was in his usual mindset, I don't mind what happened. This would mean the call is what the call would have been even if the game was a blowout. Otherwise, it's bull.
It's a shame, perfect games only come every blue moon. I think instant replay is the key, not only for baseball but for all sports where judement calls are made. That one call could mean so many dollars to the one's it effects. For instance that pitcher could have a incentive in his contract that if he were to throw a perect game he would get a millon dollars or so. With so much riding on these judgement calls wouldn't you want to get it right? Would you want to win the SuperBowl on a bad call? I wouldn't.
How can you feel bad for the ump? He made a bonehead call at the worst possible moment. I think somehow the umps should be held accountable for blatantly ridiculous calls. I don't know how, but they should just like any other job you are responsible and pay the consequences for bad decisions. I dont' think instant replay is the answer. Sounds good in theory and would resolve a lot of it, but where does it end? We're already seeing 4 hour 9 inning games.
It could/might be changed. Just read thei: http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2010/...her-loses-perfect-game-blown/?test=latestnews
Been a lot of blown calls lately and some have been the deciding factor in the game. I wouldn't say we should have instant replay on all calls but there should be some form of appeal when the game is on the line. Hard to get into the bigs as an umpire and the ones who make it stay there until they retire which is at an age far older than the players. Great vision and instincts are necessary for an umpire to be good. When he no longer is at the top of his game he needs to be let go....just like the players.
This would have been the 3rd perfect game this year (Braden and Halladay both threw one). I know I know there's only been 20 total, just saying. :D Who thinks the Commish should overturn the call and give Galarraga the perfect game? Personally I think that's a tough precedent to set on Selig's part.
I say no since there isn't a rule allowing it. I do think the commish needs to discuss the issue and possibly come up with something that works better for the future. The pitcher had perfection and it was taken away by a mistake from the ump.
I've noticed in football, if a coach asks for a review and turns out wrong, he loses a timeout. I don't think there is anything comparable in baseball that you could do in the event the manager is wrong. Maybe you couild allow him to ask for one, and only one, review per game. The manager would be sure to reserve it for plays potentially affecting the game outcome. There would have to be some way to officially request a review other than just arguing a call. Maybe the manager could throw his hat down on home plate and stomp on it. Or he could send a sheep out onto the field (Or a goat in the case of the Cubs)
The ump knows he made a bad call he apologized and he will probably never hear the end of it, but you have to give the pitcher some credit for shrugging it off and just smiling,
I thought I noticed the pitcher bobble the ball just a smidge, as he was catching it. THIS can be changed (official ruling) and at least a no-hitter could be salvaged. If I'm Selig.....I'm on the phone with the official scorer for the game to "ask" if he'll re-consider the play/ruling.

Well actually the last one before Braden's was thrown in 2009 by Mark Buehrle. So at the current rate I'd expect another sometime before the end of the 2011 season.
