The first week of August I decided to throw in a 1/2 acre of turnips and rape on our new property. I knew the ph was low, 5.2, but didn't lime just to see what would happen. I also only used 200# of 25-5-10 when I planted. Obviously I didn't expect much and with little rain I figured nothing would happen. Well, to my surprise it turned out pretty well. I pulled this turnip out from the edge of the plot and there are some even bigger.
We do turnips (however, not quite that large) and clover every year and have lots of success with those. This year we added rape and winter oats and the deer are tearing those up! Great picture!
Oats!!! I believe nearly every seed manufacturer lays to the claim that oats are one of the most sought after cereal grains by deer due to it's palatability...always to be mixed in plots for sure!!!!
We actually have turnips growing this year in plus we planned them last year that didn't grow. Went dormant and are popping up this year. Turnips work really well for us in northern IL. Hearty and easy to plant.
I'm jealous. I normally have a few acres of turnips but we have had zero the last two years due to drought. Love the picture.
That's insane. I put down the recommended fert, already had pH where I needed it, and I also didn't get as much rain as I wanted when I planted this year, and mine took off, then got zapped by the heat. Mine are nowhere near that size. That's awesome!
