I got my 2010 Mulie Mount back that I shot this year. Let me know what you think, even if you have any negative things to say feel free to say them. The mount was done by a close family friend who is getting into the business and she is looking for any feedback.

    Thanks.

I think it looks great, especially for someone just starting out. Did she send the cape out for tanning or use the dry rub?

    Jay,

There are some subtle things I notice which your taxi could have done to improve your mount. Firstly, there is a slight ridge that runs from the back of the eye to the base of the ear (centered between the two) . You can see it clearly in the photo I've provided above. Most new taxidermists leave this ridge off their work. Secondly, your taxi needs to learn to "tuck" lips rather than "fill" and paint. The mount will look more realistic if the deer isn't wearing a band of black lipstick. I also think the eye glands could have been closed down more (tucked into the form). Again, the deer photo provided above should be used as an example. As it is now, your deer looks like it has two black eyes. Lastly, I think the deer's forehead is missing a slight amount of muscle mass (more clay). Mulies have flat foreheads verses sunken foreheads.

Were the inside of the ears painted?

I think your Taxi is on the right track. I appreciate the fact that she is soliciting critiques. It shows she cares...I hope my input helps.

Thanks for all the compliments everyone, and thanks for the input Will. That is the kind of input that she is wanting as she is not a hunter or a outdoorsman really. She is more of a artist and really loves the wildlife art that taxidermy has to offer. I'll be sure to share that info with her. The ears were never painted. They just seem to be that color naturally.

She just does the liquid tan which is why I got it back so fast.

One thing I never mentioned about this hunt and part of why it means so much to me is that it was a couple firsts for me. Being new as of last year, this was my first time getting something without the help of my older bro so I did all of the gutting/sectionig without any guidance. It was also my first time ever havin to pack a animal out, and it was one long tough pack out. Everytime I see my mount I get that little spark of pride/happiness.

    Keep the feedback coming everyone.

Thanks for the input everyone. I shared this thread with her so she can hear what you guys have to say. All input is appreciated. I really like the mount and am very happy with it so don't feel like I will take any offense to any comments. Not only was I able to help a friend with her business, but I am able to cherish my memories.

Will, that deer in your pic, hopefully he is my next victim. I LOVE Mulies with some extra junk.

I see a nice way to make that picture look even better..........take the Mulie off the wall, grab some paint and fix that orange spot on your ceiling!!!

haha, as you can tell my painting when I first bought the place wasn't the greatest. Also I spend too much time on these forums to actually take the time to dust my fake plant leaves.

    Doh...

Good catch Mark. How did I miss that? Lol......

    Jay,

For the past six years I have been very laxed on my mule deer hunting. Rather than hunt one myself, I was doing my best to help others get their deer. This year, I'm ATTACKING mule deer. I hope we're both fortunate enough to arrow deer like the one pictured! Wouldn't that be cool?

Me, you and Rocky. We still need to iron out the details but this year is looking promising for the two of us to meet up and chase after some deer. Hopefully all three of us can have some great stories/photos to share with eachother. I'm getting myself setup to do some better filming this year with a small little handicam and tripod so hopefully we can document some good hunts.
